Siena Holds off Manhattan for MAAC Victory

Loudonville, N.Y. (April 9, 2010) -- The Manhattan College women's lacrosse team overcame a two-goal deficit with six minutes to go in the game, but MAAC foe Siena College then scored three unanswered goals to hold off the Lady Jaspers 13-10 Friday afternoon in a match played at Siena.

Manhattan's offense was led by sophomore Chrissy Gutenberger who scored four goals. Caralyn Hickey and Julia Lavelle had two goals each, while Phelicia VanOverbeke and Breana Leonard chipped in with a goal apiece. Keri Morrison had two assists and Lavelle and Hickey had one helper each. Defensively, Helen Kerrisk had four caused turnovers, while Kristen Brenner picked up six ground balls.

For Siena (now 5-5, 1-1 in the MAAC), Caitlin Mikel netted seven goals, while Deidre McQuillan talled a hat-trick.

Siena outshot Manhattan 27-23 on the afternoon, with Lady Jasper goalkeeper Julia DiBernado registering eight saves.Siena's goalkeepere Kristin Concordia posted six saves.

Manhattan (1-9, 0-2 in the MAAC) battled gamely during the match, battling back from deficits of four goals, three goals and two goals to tie the game each time. The Lady Jaspers scored twice in less than two minutes and tied the game, 10- 10, with 6:11 remaining. But Siena's Mikel answered less than a minute later, scoring a free-position goal and Erin Hepper and Mikel added insurance goals with less than two minutes left.

The Lady Jaspers return home Sunday for a 10 a.m. match against non- conference opponent Brown University at Gaelic Park.
