George Mason Drops CAA Opener at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. (April 9, 2010) George Mason's women's lacrosse team opened its 2010 Colonial Athletic Association schedule with a 13-6 loss to Delaware at Rullo Stadium in Newark, Del. on Friday evening.

After Mason (3-7, 0-1 CAA) tied the game at one on a goal by sophomore attacker Mary Schwartz, Delaware (4-7, 1-1 CAA) answered with four consecutive goals and six of the next seven to take a 7-2 lead with 2:36 remaining in the first half. George Mason countered with back-to-back scores by junior attacker Madalyn Jamison to cut the deficit to three at the half.

Following the intermission, Schwartz scored her second goal of the contest off an assist by Cristina Maurizi to push the Patriots within two goals at 7-5. That was as close as the Patriots would get, though, as the Fightin' Blue Hens scored six of the final seven goals for a final score of 13-6.

Jamison and Schwartz both scored twice for the Patriots. Chelsea Gamble led Mason's defense with two caused turnovers in the contest.

Ali Libertini scored four goals to lead Delaware's attack. Blair King added a game-high three assists for the Fightin' Blue Hens.

George Mason continues conference play with a 1:00 p.m. game on Sunday, April 11 at Towson.
