No. 22 Simon Fraser Downs No. 4 Arizona State

PORTLAND, OR (April 9, 2010) Senior Ben Towner (Port Coquitlam, BC/Terry Fox Secondary) scored his fifth goal of the game to cap the score at 14-7 and lead the No. 22 Simon Fraser Clan to a convincing out of conference victory over the fourth-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils in a neutral site contest at Lake Oswego High School in Portland, Oregon on Sunday (April 4). The Sun Devil loss drops them to 8-3 on the season while Fraser improves to 3-6.

Arizona State was led by junior attackman Eric Nelson (Chandler, AZ) with 2 goals and 1 assist. Brothers Tyler and Ryan Westfall (Danville, CA) each added 1 goal and 1 assist while Anthony LaFlam (Chandler, AZ), Kevin Sanders (Tucson, AZ), and Stephen Turner (Troy, MI) each chipped in with 1 goal.

In addition to Towner, Fraser received 4 goals from senior Russel Thomas (Nanoose Bay, BC/Ballenas Secondary), 2 goals and 1 assist from senior Adam Foss (Cochrane, AB/Cochrane High School) and 1 goal each from freshman Colton Dow (Coquitlam, BC/Heritage Woods Secondary), Eric Ransom (Sherwood Park, AB/Bev Facey High School) and Stu Mills (Campbell River, BC/Timberline Secondary).

Arizona State opened the scoring just over two minutes into the game as Stephen Turner completed a pass from Tyler Westfall to give the Sun Devils the 1-0 advantage. This would be ASU's only lead of the day as the Clan responded with a four-goal run on goals by Russel Thomas, Adam Foss, Eric Ransom, and Ben Towner to give SFU a 4-1 lead. Ryan Westfall would then score his only goal of the contest to cut the Clan lead to two and end the first quarter at a score of 4-2.

Arizona State would carry the momentum over to second quarter as LaFlam and Nelson scored back-to-back over a three minute stretch to draw the Sun Devils even. With the two teams now tied 4-4 at the 9:00 minute mark of the second quarter, Towner would score the first two of three Clan goals to reclaim the lead and end the first half at 7-4.

Freshmen Stu Mills extended the Clan lead to four to open the third quarter scoring. Looking to stay within striking distance, Saunders and Tyler Westfall helped ASU bridge the gap to two at 8-6 before Towner and Thomas continued to lead the Fraser assault to make the score 10-6 and reestablish a four goal cushion heading into the final frame.

The two goals to end the third quarter would be part five unanswered goals for the Clan as Dow, Foss and Thomas gave SFU a seven goal advantage to start the fourth quarter. Nelson would add one more for Arizona State on the man-up with just under 5:00 minutes remaining before Towner concluded the scoring in the game's final minute to give Simon Fraser the 14-7 win.

Fraser outshot ASU, 48-39. Dylan Westfall (Danville, CA) played all four quarters in the Sun Devil net making 15 saves with 14 goals against. Senior Mike Ripley (Saskatoon, SK/E.D. Feehan High School) and junior Dean Stewart (Duncan, BC/Claremont Secondary) continued to split time in net for SFU. Ripley played the first half for the Clan playing 30:00 in total and making 4 saves with 4 goals against, while Stewart started the second half, playing 30:00 and making 7 saves with 3 goals against.
