Catamounts Pick Up First League Win Over Binghamton

BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Vermont Catamounts scored a season-high 22 goals to earn their first league win of the year with a 22-14 victory over visiting Binghamton in America East women's lacrosse action at Moulton Winder Field on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Samantha Stern (Cherry Hill, N.J.) led the Catamounts with four goals and two assists. Senior Sara Buxton (Northfield, Ill.) also added four goals. Senior Alison Haigh (Northborough, Mass.) and sophomore Natalie Jones (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) each potted hat tricks.

Lis Zuern led the Bearcats with a team-high four goals and two assists and Ali Castiglie added a hat trick.

Vermont took a 4-2 lead to start the game, but Binghamton climbed back within one, 5-4, after a goal by Lindsay Angelillo with 12:29 remaining in the half. UVM responded with a five straight goals to increase its leads to six, 10-4, with 1:46 left in the half.

Binghamton and Vermont each scored in the final minute and the Catamounts took an 11-5 lead into the break.

The Bearcats opened the second half scoring four of the first five goals to slice UVM's lead to three, 12-9, with 17:43 left in the game. The Catamounts went on another run, rattling off five straight, capped by a goal from Emma Kelly (Redding, Conn.), to extend their lead back to seven, 17-9, with 10:39 left.

Binghamton rallied again, scoring four of the next five goals, but could only get as close as five the rest of the way.

Laura Barber (Middlebury, Vt.) was credited with 11 saves for the Catamounts, while Emily Miller and Lauren Scott combined for 11 saves in the Binghamton net.

The Catamounts improve to 3-8 overall and 1-3 in America East. Binghamton falls to 1-9 overall and remains winless in the league at 0-3.

Vermont continues a three-game homestand when it hosts LeMoyne on Wednesday (April 14) at 3:00 p.m. at Moulton Winder Field.
