Western Connecticut Hangs on to Defeat Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine -- The Western Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team scored seven straight goals in the second half to erase a one-goal deficit, then hung on to defeat the University of Southern Maine, 15-13, in a Little East Conference game Saturday afternoon at Paula D. Hodgdon Field.

The win was the third straight for the Colonials, and improved their record to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Huskies, playing their conference opener, dropped their second straight game to fall to 4-6.

Tied 8-8 at halftime, Southern Maine took a one-goal lead when senior Erica Robertson (St. Albans, Vt.) scored with 28:52 remaining. Western Connecticut got the equalizer with 24:00 to play on a goal by freshman Devon Edwards (Islip, N.Y.).

The floodgates opened for the Colonials as freshman Nicole Perrone (Brookfield, Conn.) and senior Kara Kruckiewicz (Brookfield, Conn.) each scored three times over the next 10:17 to give the Colonials a 15-9 advantage with 13:43 to play.

Southern Maine rallied for four goals from four different players in a span of five minutes to pull within two, 15-13, with 7:42 to play. The Colonials effectively controlled the ball to run much of the time off the clock while holding the Huskies to one shot to preserve the victory.

Perrone and Kruckiewicz led the Colonials offense scoring four goals. Edwards finished the day with two goals and two assists. Sophomores Jessica Bouwman (New Milford, Conn.) and Brianna Mitterando (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) contributed two goals apiece. Rookie goalie Meghan Maroney (Granby, Conn.) recorded eight saves.

For the Huskies, senior Jess Knight (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) scored four goals. Freshman Shelby Turcotte (Lewiston, Maine) added three scores, junior Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, Maine/Pomfret School) had two goals and a game-high three assists, and rookie Haley Jordan (Falmouth, Maine) scored twice. Freshman goalie Samantha Kiesel (Lakeville, Mass./Kents Hill) registered 12 saves.

Southern Maine hits the road Tuesday (5:00 p.m.) traveling to St. Joseph's College. Western Connecticut will play Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) under the lights at Worcester State College.
