No. 13 St. John Fisher Hands Stevens First Empire 8 Loss

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (April 10, 2010) The Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team fell 14-8 to 13th-ranked St. John Fisher College on Saturday afternoon at Growney Stadium in Pittsford, N.Y. Fisher, now 11-0 on the season, regained the lead midway through the third quarter, and the Ducks could not get over the hump the rest of the way in the loss.

Stevens was led by freshman Nicolas Philippi (Mullica Hill, N.J.) who had three goals. With the loss, the Ducks drop to 7-4 on the season and 3-1 in the Empire 8.

The Cardinals (11-0 overall, 3-0 Empire 8) took a 3-0 lead 5:07 into the game on goals from sophomore Kyle Denhoff (Penfield, N.Y.), senior Dave Malone (Penfield, N.Y.), and sophomore Mitch Ritchie (Brockport, N.Y.). Late in the first, the Ducks were able to get on the board with an unassisted tally from sophomore Kevin Rose (Garden City, N.Y.) to get within two.

Senior Chris Schmidt (Camillus, N.Y.) helped Fisher regain a three-goal lead with a score, but 2:58 later Philippi tallied his first of the game to get the Ducks within two (4-2). Rose scored his second of the afternoon with 3:55 remaining in the first half, and Stevens went into the locker room trailing 4-3.

Philippi scored two goals 2:11 apart in the third quarter to give the Ducks their first lead of the game, but Fisher came back and went on a 3-0 scoring spurt over a span of 3:01 to regain the momentum and take hold of a 7-5 lead.

Junior Chris Laurita (Timber Ponds, N.J.) pulled the Ducks within one with 3:38 to play in the third, but Fisher had the answer, scoring three-straight times to open up a 10-6 lead with 7:33 left in the game. Sophomore Alex Hofrichter (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Laurita each tallied around a Fisher goal to make it an 11-8 game with 4:21 to go, but the Cardinals closed the contest on 3-0 run to secure the victory.

Fisher ended the game with a 41-29 advantage in shots, a 26-22 edge in ground balls, and won 19 of 25 face-offs. Stevens' junior goalkeeper Dave Decker (Califon, N.J.) made nine saves in a losing effort in goal. His counterpart, senior Jon Cortina (Binghamton, N.Y.), made nine saves as well and earned the win.

Philippi, Rose, and Laurita all had multiple tallies for the Ducks, and senior captain Bobby Steinhauser (Boonton Township, N.J.) picked up a team-high seven ground balls. Junior Ted Pfeifer (Crozet, Va.), junior Taylor Brown (Cortland, N.Y.), Rose, and Laurita all scooped up a pair of ground balls.

Denhoff led Fisher with four goals, and junior Ryan Schmidt (Whiteboro, N.Y.) notched a game-high five points on three goals and two assists. Malone had a pair of goals and a pair of assists, and Ritchie had two goals. Erich Rassow (Orchard Park, N.Y.) won 19 of 25 face-offs and picked up a game-high nine ground balls.

Stevens will return to action on April 17 when it hosts Rochester Institute of Technology. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m. and the game will be webcast live at www.PennAtlantic.com.
