Bradshaw Unstoppable as Swarthmore Defeats CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - It's been quite a week for senior Tyler Bradshaw. Three days after leading the Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team (3-7, 1-5) to its first Centennial Conference victory of the season, the senior attacker scored a career-high five goals, including the game winner with 3:33 left to play, as the Garnet defeated Christopher Newport 11-9 on Saturday afternoon at Stonewall Jackson High School.

For the week, Bradshaw has scored nine goals and leads the Garnet with 28 goals for the 2010 season. Senior Anthony Phalen and sophomore Max Hubbard each scored twice, while sophomore Zach Belden and freshman Wes Marcik also found the back of the net. Bradshaw and John Bukawyn also added assists.

Down 6-5 at the half, the Garnet outscored the Captains 3-0 in the third period to take the lead. Bradshaw got it started with a man-up goal at the 12:34 mark, knotting the game at 6-6. Swat took the lead thanks to Bradshaw's third goal of the game at the 7:45 mark, while a goal from Marcik with :58 seconds remaining in the period gave Swat an 8-6 lead heading into the fourth.

Bradshaw's second man-up goal of the game just :15 seconds into the fourth period gave a commanding Swat a 9-6 lead, but the Captains still had something up their sleeve. Down 9-6, Christopher Newport scored three unanswered goals over the next 11 minutes, as a goal from Britt Hoover tied the game at 9-9 with exactly 4:00 remaining.

The game, now tied 9-9, Bradshaw came to the rescue right when Swat needed him. The senior's fifth and final goal at the 3:33 proved to be game-winner, as Swat took a 10-9 lead. Phalen put the final nail in the coffin, scoring a man-advantage goal with 2:39 left to play.

In goal, senior Kevin Friedenberg made 11 saves for the Garnet. CNU's Hoover matched the performance of Bradshaw, scoring five goals of his own.

Junior Mark Czernyk won 15 face-offs, helping the Garnet to significant advantages in face-offs won (16-7) and ground balls (32-23).

Swarthmore returns to action on Saturday with a home contest with Drew on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.).
