Denver Stuns No. 11 Stanford with Key MPSF Victory

DENVER University of Denver sophomore Lauren Ciccomascolo (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) and freshman Bonnie Wells (Adelaide, Australia) both scored four goals, as the Pioneers defeated the No. 11 Stanford Cardinal 17-12 on Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 927 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

"Stanford was one of the toughest opponents on our schedule," head coach Liza Kelly said. "I think both teams came to play today."

The Cardinal (8-5, 2-1 MPSF) opened the scoring 2:04 into the first half, but Denver (10-4 4-0 MPSF) rattled off six-straight goals to take a 6-1 lead with 13:38 remaining in the first half. Stanford battled back with four straight scores, and the Pioneers took a narrow 6-5 advantage into halftime.

After two goals from each side early in the second half, the Pioneer offense exploded for seven-straight goals to take the lead for good.

Despite being outshot by the Cardinal 40-29, the Pioneers held Stanford to 12 goals largely due to the defensive efforts of sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Harman (Boyertown, Pa.), who recorded a career-high 16 saves to keep the Cardinal offense at bay. Her 16 saves were the most by a Pioneer since Steph Schneider posted 17 on April 3, 2005.

Sophomore Kara Secora (Denver, Colo.) added five points on two goals and three assists, and senior Lexi Sanders (Greenwood Village, Colo.) contributed two scores and an assist to aid the Denver offense.

Denver continues conference play on Saturday, April 17 when they host Fresno State at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium at 1:00 p.m. MT.
