No. 16 Simon Fraser Defeats Oregon State

BURNABY, BC (April 10, 2010) The No. 16 Simon Fraser men's lacrosse team sprinted to a 9-1 halftime lead and had nine different players score in a 21-7 victory over Oregon State (7-5) at Terry Fox Field Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Clan to 4-6 on the year and 14-2 all-time against the Beavers.

After getting out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Adam Foss (Cochrane, AB/Cochrane High School) and Rick Bezuidenhout (Campbell River, BC/Timberline Secondary) a breakdown off of a loose ball in the Clan's defensive end would leave Beaver attackman Jake Beutler (Hillsboro, OR/Century) wide open in front of the SFU net to reset the score at 2-1.

From there it would be all Fraser to end the first half as the Clan held Oregon State scoreless for the final 24:00 minutes and netted seven goals themselves during that time. Junior midfielder Ben Davies (New Westminster, BC/New Westminster Secondary) made an immediate impact in his first game back from injury in 2010 scoring 3 of his 4 goals on the day in the first half, helping Simon Fraser build the 9-1 halftime lead.

Foss scored his third of a team high 5 goals to start the second half, extending the Clan lead to nine. Undeterred by the Fraser assault, a young Beavers squad would refuse to roll over and responded with an inspired effort for the remainder of the third quarter.

Oregon State scored back-to-back on goals by sophomore Alex Spang (Beaverton, OR/Sunset) and a man-up tally by freshman Quenton Berger (Hillsboro, OR/Liberty) to make the score 10-3. Taking advantage of SFU's complacent play, the Beavers would continue to trade goals with the Clan scoring twice more to tie the frame 4-4 and round out the quarter at a score of 13-5.

Carrying an eight-goal lead into the fourth quarter, Fraser re-found their fire in the final period and outscored Oregon State 8-2 over the final 15 minutes to account for the 21-7 win.

Simon Fraser was led by senior attackmen Ben Towner (Port Coquitlam, BC/Terry Fox Secondary) with 3 goals and 5 assists and Adam Foss had 5 goals and 2 assists, while midfielders Ben Davies, 4 goals, and Russel Thomas (Nanoose Bay, BC/Ballenas Secondary) 1 goal, 3 assists, each added 4 points.

The Clan also got 5 goals and 4 assists from their underclassmen. Freshman Stu Mills (Campbell River, BC/Timberline Secondary) led the way with 2 goals, while sophomore Rick Bezuidenhout (Campbell River, BC/Timberline Secondary), freshman Colton Dow (Coquitlam, BC/Heritage Woods Secondary) and freshman Eric Ransom (Sherwood Park, AB/Bev Facey High School) each had 1 goal and 1 assist. Sophomore face-off specialist Ryan Hodge (San Antonio, TX/Texas Military Institute) also featured prominently in the win registering 1 assist and going 18 for 29 (62%) on face-offs.

Fraser played all three goaltenders in the win. Senior Mike Ripley (Saskatoon, SK/E.D. Feehan) played the opening 25:00 minutes making 2 saves with 1 goal allowed. Junior Dean Stewart (Duncan, BC/Claremont) stepped in with 5:00 minutes remaining in the first half, making 3 saves with 4 goals against over the next 20:00 minutes of action.

Freshman Kyle Middleton (Nanaimo, BC/Woodlands) played an impressive fourth quarter (15:00 minutes) making 8 saves, with only 2 goals against. OSU senior Brandt Vance also turned in a quality performance, playing all four quarters for the Beavers and making 16 saves despite facing heavy pressure from the Clan offense with SFU firing 53 shots on the day.
