Chiricosta Nets 8 to Lead Westfield State Past Smith

WESTFIELD, Mass. Junior Laura Chiricosta had eight goals and two assists to lead Westfield State to a 20-11 victory over Smith College in a non-league women's lacrosse game on Tuesday evening, April 13.

It was the seventh straight victory for the streaking Owls, who boosted their record to 8-1. Smith dropped to 3-8.

Sparked by three goals from Phoebe Hopkins, Smith College held a 5-4 lead with 11:30 remaining in the first half. But Westfield took an 8-6 halftime lead sparked by two goals from Ally Brown.

Westfield took control at the outset of the second half and outscored Smith 8-2 for a 16-8 lead with 15:02 remaining.

Chiricosta tallied six of her game-high eight goals in the second half. The Owls' balanced attack was also led by Rachel Dionne (3 goals, 4 assists) and Carly Keeley (3 goals, 3 assists). Brown and Becca Kelley contributed two goals apiece. Dionne also had a game-high eight ground balls.

Hopkins led Smith with four goals, all in the first half. Mary Pasini scored three goals. Westfield out-shot Smith, 39-22.
