Southern Maine Rallies to Down St. Joseph's (ME)

STANDISH, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's lacrosse team scored nine unanswered goals over the final 20 minutes of play to erase a two-goal deficit and defeat St. Joseph's College, 14-7, in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Huskies and lifts their record to 5-6. The Monks had their 10-game unbeaten string (9-0-1) snapped and lost for the first time this season.

Senior Jess Knight (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) scored seven goals, one shy of the school single-game record, to lead the Southern Maine offense. Junior Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, Maine/Pomfret School) added three goals, all in the second half, and freshman Lauren Santo (Salem, N.H.) contributed two scores, both in the second half. Rookie goalie Samantha Kiesel (Lakeville, Mass./Kents Hill) registered 14 saves to pick up her third win of the season.

Senior Lauren Hagerman (Scarborough, Maine) had a hand in all seven St. Joseph's goals, scoring twice and assisting on the other five. Junior Alyssa Marchant (Wakefield, Mass.) had three goals and rookie Erika Waterhouse (South Portland, Maine) added two. Sophomore goalie Taylor Allison (Pawtucket, R.I./St. Mary Academy) recorded six saves.

Tied 5-5 at halftime, St. Joseph's took a 7-5 lead on goals from Hagerman and Waterhouse in the first 10 minutes of the second half before the Huskies offense came to life.

Knight ignited the Huskies rally scoring her fourth goal of the game with 19:20 to play, and tied the game 21 seconds later with her fifth score.

Santo gave USM the lead for good converting a free position attempt with 16:42 remaining. The Huskies would add six more goals, three from Vaughan and two from Knight, before the end of the game.

Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) hosting the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for a Little East Conference game. St. Joseph's travels to Rivier College on Friday (5:00 p.m.) for a GNAC (Great Northeast Athletic Conference) game.
