Cantwell Scores Four as Rutgers Rolls Past Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. (April 13, 2010) Rutgers senior attacker Brooke Cantwell (Moorestown, N.J.) scored a game-high four goals as the Scarlet Knights defeated Villanova (7-4, 0-3 BIG EAST) on the road 14-6 on Tuesday, April 13 at Villanova Stadium.

Rutgers (9-3, 2-2 BIG EAST) outscored the Wildcats in both halves, 8-3 in the first and 6-3 in the second as it held an opponent to just six points for the second-straight game.

Villanova tallied the game's first goal five minutes into the contest before the Scarlet Knights took over the lead on back-to-back scores from sophomore Lindsey Watts (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Cantwell. It marked the third time this season that Cantwell led RU with four goals, which also extended her streak of consecutive games with a point scored to 22-straight.

Following another Wildcat goal, the Scarlet Knights went on a 4-0 run to balloon their lead to four goals (6-2). Freshman midfielder Stephanie Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) scored a goal on an assist from sophomore Brittany Davis (Wading River, N.Y.) to make it 3-2 in RU's favor. The Wading River connection continued on the next goal as junior Kristen Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) scored a goal on an assist from her younger sister Stephanie.

Cantwell found her second goal of the game, while junior midfielder Marlena Welsh (Jarrettsville, Md.) posted a goal to cap the run. Villanova responded with score at the 6:08 mark in the first half, but the Scarlet Knights would close out the first period with goals from Davis and Cantwell for an 8-3 halftime lead.

Rutgers continued to roll in the second half as Welsh and Kristen Anderson scored back-to-back goals for a 10-3 advantage. Both teams then traded goals with Watts picking up her second tally of the game to make it 11-4.

The Scarlet Knights outscored the Wildcats 3-2 over the final nine minutes of the game en route to the 14-6 victory as senior midfielder Mary Cryan (Newtown Square, Pa.), sophomore midfielder Ali Steinberg (Suffern, N.Y.) and Cantwell each scored goals.

RU will close out its two-game road trip on Saturday, April 17, against Georgetown at 1:00 p.m.
