CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Second-ranked North Carolina used a 7-3 second half to defeat the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils, 9-6, Wednesday night at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. The Blue Devils outshot UNC 20-16 and Kat Thomas netted a hat trick, but it was not enough to overcome the Tar Heels in the end as Duke falls to 11-4 (2-3 ACC) with the loss. North Carolina improves to 12-1 on the year, 4-1 in the conference.

Despite the final score, it was the Blue Devils who jumped out to the early lead. Lindsay Gilbride put the Devils up 1-0 off an assist from Christie Kaestner, who led Duke with two helpers on the night. Both offenses struggled in the early going, but Duke was able to extend its lead to 2-0 at the 13:54 mark in the opening frame as Sarah Bullard netted a free position goal.

However, Becky Lynch, who totaled a game-high four points on three goals and an assist, tallied back-to-back scores in a 15-second span to knot the game at two-all late in the first half. Duke regained the lead 16 seconds late on an unassisted goal from Kaestner and headed into halftime with a narrow, 3-2 advantage.

After limiting North Carolina to just two goals in the first half, Duke was unable to keep the Tar Heel offense, which averages nearly 16 goals a game, at bay. UNC tied the game at three less than three minutes into the second half and took the lead for good four minutes later. Six answered goals in total put North Carolina up 8-3 with 13 minutes to play. The Blue Devils outscored UNC 3-1 over the final 10 minutes, but it was too little too late for Duke.

With the win, North Carolina also earns a point in the Carlyle Cup and now leads Duke 12-7.5 on the year.

The Blue Devils will have a week to prepare for the 2010 ACC Women's Lacrosse Tournament, which begins Thursday, April 22 and runs through Sunday, April 25.
