Rufo Scores Five as Scranton Edges Marywood

Scranton, PA The University of Scranton got five goals from Mike Rufo and held off a late surge by Marywood University to claim an 8-7 win in a non-conference battle between the cross-town rivals on Wednesday evening at Marywood. The Royals improved to 4-7 on the season with the win while the Pacers slipped to 8-3.

George Downey IV (Palmyra, PA) opened the scoring for Marywood just under three minutes into the game with an unassisted goal, but Scranton countered with tallies by JP Barton and Rufo in the final 3:34 of the first quarter to hold a 2-1 lead after the first 15 minutes of play.

William Roerden (Warwick, NY) knotted the score with man-down goal for the Pacers at the 11:04 mark of the second stanza, but Scranton's Rufo would sandwich a pair of goals around one by Christian Dugan. Rufo's third goal of the game came with just two seconds remaining in the second quarter to give the Royals a 5-2 halftime lead.

Marywood battled back in the third quarter, scoring the only three goals of the period while out-shooting Scranton 11-4 in the period. Downey scored his second goal of the game at the 8:56 mark to bring the Pacers back within two. Roerden and Downey would then score goals separated by just 29 seconds late in the quarter to tie the score at 5-5 heading into the final quarter.

Daniel Slade scored an unassisted goal just 1:02 into the fourth period to put Scranton back in front before Rufo added two more tallies to give the Royals an 8-5 advantage with 6:09 to play. Nick Parks (Emmaus, PA) countered with a goal for the Pacers just 28 seconds later.

Downey cut the Royals' lead to 8-7 with his fourth goal of the contest with 39 seconds remaining off Jamie Beagen's (Patchogue, NY) second assist of the game. The Pacers gained possession on the ensuing face-off, but were unable to get a shot past Scranton goalie Ben Worthington, who finished with 13 saves to pick up the win.

Marywood held a 36-31 edge in shots for the game and a 41-27 advantage in groundballs. The Pacers also won 11 of the game's 17 draws.

Rufo led all scorers with five goals while Slade finished with two points on a goal and an assist for Scranton.

Marywood, who got 12 saves from goalie Jesse Habich (Broomall, PA), was paced by Downey's four-goal performance. Roerden (2 goals) and Beagen (2 assists) also had multiple-point nights for the Pacers, who are now 3-2 in games decided by one goal this season.

The Pacers return to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Shenandoah University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference match-up scheduled to face-off at 3:00 p.m. in Scranton.

SCRANTON, Pa.-The University of Scranton claimed bragging rights in the Electric City Wednesday night by holding off cross-town rival Marywood University, 8-7, at Pacer Field.

Sophomore midfielder Mike Rufo (Broomall, Pa./Haverford School) tied his season-high with five goals and sophomore attacker Daniel Slade (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) finished with a goal and an assist as the Royals improved to 4-7.

Junior midfielder George Downey IV (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) led the Pacers, now 8-3, with four goals and junior attacker William Roerden (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) contributed two.

Tied 2-2 midway through the second period, Rufo sandwiched a pair of goals around one by junior midfielder Christian Dugan (Avon, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) in the final three minutes before intermission as Scranton opened up a three-goal cushion, 5-2, by halftime.
