Rufo Scores Five as Scranton Edges Marywood

The Pacers held Scranton scoreless in the third period and answered on the offensive end with two goals by Downey and one by Roerden to forge a 5-5 tie entering the final 15 minutes of play.

Slade started a 3-0 rally with an unassisted goal with 13:58 remaining and Rufo finished it off with back-to-back goals at the 9:26 and 6:06 marks to give Scranton what appeared to be a comfortable 8-5 lead.

Not so.

Marywood junior attacker Nicholas Parks (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) shuffled an under-handed shots that got past Royal freshman goalie Ben Worthington (Jenkintown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) to make it 8-6 with 5:41 remaining. In the closing minute on an extra-man opportunity, Downey took a pass from junior midfielder Jamie Beagen (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and drilled in a shot for a goal with 39 seconds remaining to cut the lead to one.

Marywood had an opportunity to tie the game up in the closing seconds, but a shot by Roerden was wide of the mark and another by freshman midfielder Gregory Nester (Morgantown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) was blocked.

In his third start of the season, Worthington finished with 13 saves while Marywood junior goalie Jesse Habich (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) was credited with 12. Rufo's five goals tied his season-high of five against then 12th-ranked Ithaca on Saturday, February 27, at Fitzpatrick Field.

Marywood held a 36-31 advantage in shots and a 41-27 edge in ground balls. The Pacers also won 11 of 17 face-off attempts, but failed to cash in on six extra-man opportunities, converting only one.

The Royals will continue this three-game road trip on Saturday, April 17, against Goucher College in Landmark Conference action in Towson, Maryland, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
