Boxers' Comeback not Enough to Trump Loggers'

TACOMA, Wash. - After giving up a six-goal first half lead, Pacific saw a valiant come-from-behind rally in the final 10 minutes of the game fall short Wednesday as the Boxers concluded the 2010 women's lacrosse season with an 18-16 loss to Puget Sound at East Baker Field.

The Boxers led by as much as 9-3 late in the first hald and held an 11-8 lead five minutes into the second half before the Loggers (10-2) rattled off a string of nine unanswered goals to build a 17-11 lead with 10 minutes to go. Pacific charged back to score five of the last six goals of the game, but the effort was not enough to win it.

Kaitlyn Harper (Fr., Oregon City, Ore.) led Pacific with five goals while Monica Smith (So., Wilsonville, Ore.) added four goals and Elise Talboy (Boise, Idaho) scored two. Sofia Lama led Puget Sound with six goals. Cathy Soukup added four goals while Julia Schulman and Jessica McDonald each scored three.

With the loss, Pacific finishes the season at 6-5 overall and ends the first winning season in the four-year history of the program.

After trailing 2-1 early in the contest, Pacific built a 5-2 lead thanks to a run of four unanswered goals, including two by Talboy, which ended on Abby Coleman's (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) at the 18:01 mark. A single Loggers' goal by Soukup divided the first run from another four-goal run, which culminated on Harper's free-position goal with 7:25 to go for a 9-3 Pacific lead. Puget Sound went on to score the last three goals of the stanza to come with 9-6 at the half.

The two teams traded a pair of goals over the first five minutes of the second half before the Loggers rattled off their winning nine-goal run. Lama opened the surge with a goal at the 23:26 mark off of a Jessica McDonald assist. Soukup tied it at 11-11 with her free-position goal with 21 minutes to go and Lama's unassisted strike at the 16:47 mark gave the Loggers the lead for good at 12-11. Schulman capped the run with an unassisted goal at the 10:39 mark that put Puget Sound up 17-11.

The Boxers mounted a surge of their own from that point, scoring five of the final six goals of the match. Smith and Harper each scored a pair while Sydney Baker (Fr., Lake Oswego, Ore.) scored one in the run that came up just short.

Ana Calcaino earned the win in goal for the Loggers, making eight saves while going the distance. Brittany Hartmann (Fr., Portland, Ore.) took the loss, allowing eight goals and making five saves in 32 minutes of action. Leah Hodson (Fr., Hood River, Ore.) played the final 27 minutes of the game, making nine saves.

Puget Sound outshot Pacific 39-31 and held an 18-15 advantage in draw controls. Both teams finished with 16 ground balls. Smith led the Boxers with five draw controls while Harper finished with three ground balls.
