Dominican College Downs St. Thomas Aquinas

Orangeburg, NY (4/15/10) -- The Dominican College women's lacrosse team defeated the visiting Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College, 11-9, this afternoon in a non-conference game at the DC Lacrosse Field.

Dominican opened up the scoring as sophomore Aubree Williams (Great Meadows, NJ) tallied her first goal of the game off the assist from midfielder Sarah Kiernan (Saugerties, NY) with 28:37 remaining in the first half. The Spartans then went on a 3-0 run to take a 3-1 lead, but DC charged back with a 6-0 run to close out the first half ahead 7-3.

Kiernan converted a free position shot for the first goal of the run, followed by a Williams unassisted goal. Junior attacker Amanda Matos (Vernon, NJ) recorded her first goal of the game off the dish from Williams to lift the Lady Chargers to a 4-3 lead.

Williams completed the run with three unanswered goals with assists coming off the sticks of freshman Michelle Fiorvanti (Commack, NY) and Matos for the 7-3 lead at the intermission.

STAC answered back with a 4-0 run to start the second half to tie the contest at 7-7, but a 2-0 spurt by Matos with an assist credited to Williams regained a 9-7 advantage for the Lady Chargers.

A Spartan goal cut the lead to 9-8 with 9:40 left in regulation, but a second 2-0 run by DC with Kiernan and Fiorvanti scoring goals off passes from Williams and Matos put Dominican up 11-8 en route to the 11-9 victory.

Lady Charger goalie Lindsey Grundfast (Saugerties, NY) made five saves in 54:10 of action, while Heather Wannamaker (Blauvelt, NY) played 5:50 minutes.

With the victory Dominican improves to 4-7 overall.
