Fitchburg State Doubles Down UMass Dartmouth

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. (April 13, 2010) The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team got back into the win column this afternoon as the Falcons downed UMass Dartmouth, 18-9 in non-conference action.

Senior Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) and freshman Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) led the Fitchburg State offense, combining for 14 points in the contest. Swan led all scorers with a game-high six goals and one assist, while Kelley was active on both ends, posting three goals, four assists, three groundballs and three draw controls.

Sophomore Amanda Burns (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) added the Falcons offensive mix, netting a hat-trick of scores and posting one assists, while sophomore Gianna Gitto (Leominster, Mass./Saint Bernards) and junior Kaitlyn Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) rounded out the Fitchburg State scorers with a pair of goals each.

After a dead-even first half of play which witnessed an 8-8 tie at the break, Fitchburg State grabbed its first multi-goal lead, using back-to-back scores by Gitto and Burns just two minutes into the second period. UMass Dartmouth snapped the Falcons scoring at the 26:58 mark as Brittney Enos (E. Falmouth, Mass./E. Falmouth) notched for her first tally of the game, but Fitchburg State outscored the Corsairs 8-1 over the final 25 minutes to secure its sixth victory of the season.

The Falcons used a balanced attack throughout much of the second half as five different players record markers. Swan, J. Kelley, Burns and Gitto sparked the Falcons with two goals apiece, while K. Kelley and freshman Samantha Bonasera (Chelsea, Vt./Chelsea) each added a score.

Fitchburg State controlled the point of attack, out-shooting UMass Dartmouth, 34-28 in the contest. The Falcons boasted an 18-10 advantage in draw controls, while posting 21 groundballs. Freshman Abbie Brown (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) earned the victory in net for the Falcons, totaling 12 over 60 minutes, while Liz Miller (Littleton, Mass./Westford Academy) and Angelina Donoavan (Medford, Mass./Medford) stopped five shots apiece for the Corsairs.

Fitchburg State (6-5, 1-2 NEWLA) is back in action this weekend as it travels to Worcester State on Saturday starting at 12:00 p.m. UMass Dartmouth (3-4, 0-1 LEC) will visit Southern Maine on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
