Strong First Half Lifts Colonials Over Bryant

Smithfield, R.I. April 16, 2010 The Robert Morris University Colonials snapped a three-game losing streak with a 13-11 win over the Bryant Bulldogs on Friday afternoon at Bryant Turf Complex. The Colonials outscored the Bulldogs 9-3 in the first-half and held onto that lead until the end, despite a late comeback by Bryant.

The win evens RMU's league record to 4-4 and improves them to 6-8 overall, while Bryant falls to 2-13 overall and 2-6 in the league.

Alana Beck (Carle Place, N.Y./Old Dominion) extended her point scoring streak to 16 and led the Colonials with four goals and two assists for six points. Junior Ashley Trombetta (Sykesville, Md./Century) extended her point scoring streak to 17 and also scored a quartet of goals in the win and added one assist.

Ali Gibbons (Candia, N.H./Manchester) recorded a hat trick and an assist and Colleen O'Donnell (Portland, Ore./St. Mary's Academy) led the Colonials defense with three caused turnovers and six ground balls. Beck also forced three turnovers.

Lauren Sheridan and Allison Faiola led the charge for Bryant with three goals each.

Trombetta started off the contest by capturing her 25th goal of the season 3:53 into the start of the first half. Bryant recorded its only lead of the contest by scoring the next two goals at the 5:45 and 10:38 marks. That one goal advantage lasted just 12 seconds because Gibbons stormed back with her first goal of the contest to knot the score. Throughout the next 11 minutes, Gibbons scored her second unassisted goal and Beck added two scores to give the Colonials a 5-2 lead.

With 6:45 left in the half, Bryant cut into RMU's three goal cushion with Faiola's second score of the half. However, RMU's offense went on a scoring surge in the final five minutes of play and scored four more goals, including Brenna Flynn's (Powell, Ohio/Liberty) first of the season with 20 seconds left to play. The Colonials held a 9-3 lead heading into the second half.

Bryant opened up the contest with a goal eight seconds into the contest to cut their deficit to just four goals. RMU scored their first goal of the second frame at 5:14 when Beck found a pass from Gibbons to mark her third goal of the contest.

The Bulldogs and the Colonials each swapped a pair of goals throughout the next eight minutes to set the score at 12-6 with 16:08 left to play.

Throughout the final 15 minutes of play, Bryant made a strong effort to overtake the Colonials by scoring five goals to their one with three of them being free position goals, but RMU was able to hold on for the 13-11 victory.

Erica Webb (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) posted her ninth double-digit save performance of the season with 11 stops, while Bryant goalie Lauren Filippone also added 11.

RMU was 0 for 4 on free position attempts, while the Bulldogs were successful on 4 of 12 opportunities.
