Connecticut Tops Villanova for First Big East Victory

STORRS, Conn. - It was a hat trick by freshman Jordan Christopher (Downingtown, Pa.) that led the University of Connecticut lacrosse team to its first BIG EAST victory of the season against Villanova. The Huskies won a 10-8 conference game on Friday night at George J. Sherman-Family Sports Complex. Christopher was joined by classmate Chelsea Hauswirth (Crownsville, Md.) on top of the UConn scoresheet with a goal and two assists.

It was a career-night for both Christopher and Hauswirth as both set new plateaus in scoring while Villanova was also led by a pair of student-athletes who finished the game with three points. Justine Donodeo and Erica Rybinski paced the Wildcats in scoring with Donodeo contributing a hat trick.

Donodeo scored twice in the second half aiding Villanova in a comeback attempt while three other Wildcats outscored UConn 5-1 in the final 12:34 of the game. The Huskies held a 6-2 advantage into halftime thanks to a pair of goals from Christopher and contributions from three other UConn student-athletes.

Hauswirth sparked a three-goal run to open the second half to make it an 8-2 UConn game. Senior Katie Devaney (Fayetteville, N.Y.) tacked on her second of the night during the run with an assist from redshirt senior Ashley Mitchelides (Hudson, Ohio).

Devaney and Mitchelides both finished the game with two points. Redshirt junior Lauren Sparks (West Chester, Pa.) and sophomore Kiersten Tupper (Camillus, N.Y.) also finished the game with two points each for the Huskies.

Sparks scored twice in the last 13 minutes of regulation to help UConn keep the Wildcats at a distance. In addition, Sparks was one of three Huskies to finish the conference contest with a team-best three ground balls.

Senior Jenna Moulton (East Rochester, N.Y.) made four saves for the win, collecting three ground balls and causing one turnover. Sparks caused a game-high three turnovers.

The Huskies host No. 13 Loyola (Md.) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Sherman Complex. Following the BIG EAST contest, UConn will host Youth Day post-game clinic with the team.
