Dominican University Avenges Loss to Grand Canyon

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - The Dominican University of California men's lacrosse team avenged an earlier season loss to Grand Canyon University with an 8-5 victory over the 'Lopes at Forest Meadows Field on Friday afternoon.

The Penguins (3-7), who fought from behind but eventually fell 12-11 in the teams' last meeting, fell behind to GCU (2-9) early 1-0. Corey Botwinick got the Penguins on the scoreboard around the six minute mark to tie things up but the 'Lopes pounded in a pair of goals to take the 3-1 advantage.

Cam Evangelho spotted Jim Little for the goal with 12 seconds left in the first quarter to keep the Penguins in the game 3-2. Little scored the only goal of the second quarter in the half's final minute to send the two teams into halftime tied at 3-3.

A minute into the second half, GCU scored another goal but the Penguins latched down and scored five unanswered goals, keeping the 'Lopes scoreless for over 25 minutes of play. The 'Lopes scored a goal in the final two minutes but the Penguins' lead would hold up.

The Penguins outshot the 'Lopes 36 to 17. Botwinick, Evangelho, and Little each scored a pair of goals. Zach Rodriguez and Reed Upson each chipped in a goal apiece. Evangelho and Little also added a pair of assists each. Matt Polizzi and Rodriguez each had one assist apiece.

Dominican did an oustanding job defensively, allowing no GCU player to score multiple goals. Ryan Williams played the full 60 minutes in the net and made seven saves for the Penguins. Despite only winning a thidd of the game's faceovers, Dominican scooped up 50 groundballs and had more than half as many turnovers (15 to 7).

"Our defense was very solid and didn't give up many shots in the paint," said Dominican Head Coach Ned Webster. "Ryan was steady. Their goalie played well yet again but I hope we finish the ball better on Sunday than we did today."

The Penguins will face Westminster College (Utah) on Sunday, April 18 in the Penguins' last regular season game of the year. Faceoff against the Griffins is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Forest Meadows Field. The Penguins will honor seniors Josh McKay and Joey Sullivan in a pregame ceremony.
