Wilkin Leads Rollins Second Half Surge Over Regis

DENVER, Colo. (April 16, 2010) Senior defender Laura Wilkin registered two assists, the first of her career, and added four ground balls, two draw controls, and two caused turnovers as the Rollins College Tars defeated Regis University 18-10 on Friday afternoon in Denver, Colo.

Rollins (8-4) bounced back after a disjointed first half that left them in a three goal deficit at the break, but exploded in the second period, outscoring Regis 13-2 to earn their seventh victory over a regional opponent out of eight total regional games. With the loss, Regis drops to an overall mark of 2-7 on the season.

Leading the charge were Marissa Giannerini and Katy Tyszko, with four goals apiece, with each netting three in the second half. Freshmen Erica Pagliarulo, Sarah Ann Showell, and Tricia Grant fired two each past Regis goalkeeper Brittany Farniok, while Sophie Townsend, Tori Snow, Mallory Surpless, and Cat Kelley rounded out the goal count with one apiece.

Liz Connelly led the game in assists with three, while Giannerini earned two, and Townsend and Tyszko fed one each to complete the scoring efforts for the Tars.

The Rangers were headed up by AriAnna McDonald, who netted a hat trick, while Kelsi Goings and Cristina Johnson fired two apiece between the pipes. Morgan Taylor contributed two points overall with a goal and assist, while Erin Dybus and Jessika Carlstrom each scored once.

Rollins dominated the game as they out-shot Regis 44-20 and shots on goal 33-14. Thanks to a game high six ground balls from Townsend, Wilkin's four, and four additional Tars who collected three ground balls each, the Tars silenced the Rangers in ground balls 31-16.

Pagliarulo kept the Tars on track with seven draw controls, with Connelly grabbing five as Rollins won 20 of 30 total draws.

Regis fired first with a goal four minutes in, but Townsend put the Tars up on the board 44 seconds later to knot the score at 1-1. The Rangers netted the next two, setting the Tars back 3-1 with 19:24 left in the first half. But with two quick goals from Giannerini and Showell Rollins found themselves back on par with a score of 3-3 and 16:22 remaining before the break.

McDonald fired next, putting Regis ahead once more, but Rollins traded blows with two sharp goals from Surpless and Tyszko to give the Tars their first advantage of the game with a score of 5-4.

Regis closed out the first half with four unanswered goals, pulling ahead 8-5 at the half, but were unable to hold onto the lead as the second half ensued. Rollins opened up the second period with three goals in two and a half minutes, tying up the score at 8-8. The Rangers pulled ahead to one more lead with a an unassisted goal from Johnson, but Rollins opened up on a rampage in the final 25 minutes of play, outscoring Regis 10-1.

The Tars return to action on Saturday, April 17, when they take on Fort Lewis College on the campus of Regis University. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. (EST).
