Six Fourth Quarter Goals Lift Vermont over Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. Drew Philie and Derek Lichtfuss reeled off six and four goals, respectively, to lead the University of Vermont over the University of Hartford men's lacrosse team by a 13-6 final in America East conference action on Saturday at Al-Marzook Field.

Vermont built a quick 2-0 lead but Hartford answered with three-straight to take its only lead of the game at 3-2. Facing a one goal deficit at 7-6 entering the final stanza, Vermont went off for six unanswered scores in the fourth quarter to build a 13-6 lead, the eventual final.

Sophomore attack Rory O'Connor also scored twice for the Catamounts and line mate A.J. Masson added one score in the squad's seventh-straight victory over the Hawks. Hartford drops to 3-8 overall and remains winless in the league at 0-3 while Vermont improves to 3-9 with a mark of 2-1 in the America East.

Leading the Hawks' attack were sophomores Carter Bender and Kyle Goodchild. Bender matched a career-best with four points including a pair of goals and two helpers while Goodchild netted a career-best two goals.

Trailing 2-0 early in the game, the Hawks picked up the pace offensively in the final two minutes of the first quarter. Bender netted back-to-back goals, the first at the 2:06 mark to cut followed by the equalizer, a man-up goal assisted by Aidan Genik, with 52 ticks remaining in the opening stanza.

Hartford took its first and only lead of the game in the opening seconds of the second quarter. Bender returned the favor and connected with classmate Goodchild in an extra-man opportunity to give the Hawks the advantage at 3-2. The Catamounts answered with three-straight scores to regain the lead at 5-3.

Goodchild found the back of the net for his second goal of the contest with 3:29 remaining in the first half however Lichtfuss responded for Vermont with his first of four goals on the afternoon to send the Catamounts into the locker room with a 6-4 lead.

Hartford outscored Vermont 2-1 in the third quarter with Bender finding Justin Bearse at 12:29 and bringing the Hawks within one goal. Lichtfuss struck again for Vermont exactly one minute later before Michael Cudmore netted Hartford's final goal of the contest on an unassisted score with 1:59 remaining.

The Catamounts then went on to outscore the Hawks 6-0 in the final 6:47 of the contest to boost the visiting team's lead to 13-6. Lichtfuss and Philie each scored twice to lead Vermont in the late rally.

Vermont dominated the face-off X winning 13 of 21 duels. The Catamounts also converted on 4 of 5 extra-man situations while the Hawks only capitalized on 3 of 6 man-up opportunities. Vermont also held a slight edge in the shots column at 34-33.

Sophomore Scott Bement suffered the loss in the cage for the Hawks. He recorded eight saves while his counterpart David Barton turned away 10 shots for the Catamounts.

The Hawks will be playing their final home game of the season when they welcome the Binghamton Bearcats to West Hartford on Saturday, April 24 at 1:00 p.m. Hartford.

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Freshman Drew Philie (Sandwich, Mass.) and junior Derek Lichtfuss (Lutherville, Md.) combined for 10 goals to lead Vermont to a 13-6 win against Hartford in America East men's lacrosse action at Al-Marzook Field on Saturday afternoon. The victory was the seventh straight for the Catamounts against the Hawks as they improved to 3-9 (2-1 America East) with the win.

Philie notched six goals and two assists to increase his team leading point total to 38 on the season. Lichtfuss scored four goals and is tied with Philie for the team lead in goals on the season with 19.
