Bergner, Polar Bears Nip Endicott

BEVERLY, Mass. Bowdoin's Billy Bergner (Fairfield, Conn.) scored four times and added an assist as the Polar Bears topped host Endicott College, 9-6, in a non-conference men's lacrosse game on Saturday afternoon in Beverly, Mass. The loss drops the Gulls to 8-6 overall (7-1 TCCC), while Bowdoin improves to 6-5 (3-3 NESCAC).

Endicott got on the board 5:49 into the first quarter when Chris Cotter (Fairfield, Conn.) snuck a bounce shot past the feet of Bowdoin goalkeeper Chris Williamson (Winnetka, Ill.) off the right side to give the Gulls a quick 1-0 lead. It appeared the Blue and Green doubled their advantage with 4:30 left in the opening frame when the Gulls scored on backdoor look, however the goal was waived off after the near official ruled a crease violation had occurred. The score remained 1-0 after one period.

In the second, goals came in bunches for the Polar Bears as Bowdoin rattled off three straight tallies in a span of 2:33 to take a 3-1 lead. Bergner got the first off a feed from Russell Halliday (Sudbury, Mass.) and then returned the favor by assisting on a Halliday strike just 1:30 later. Adam Tracy (Providence, R.I.) got the third goal of the burst on an inside dish by Halliday to give the guests a 3-1 advantage.

Endicott scored consecutive goals by Colin Prescott (Norwalk, Conn.) and Brian Estes (Derry, N.H.) to knot the game at 3-all. Prescott's marker came as he dodged from behind the net, turned the corner, and buried a shot top shelf while falling to his backside. Estes then beat his man off goal-line extended and snuck a bounce shot to the low corner.

Bowdoin regained its two goal lead before the intermission on back-to-back goals from Tracy and Bergner. The visitor's led 5-3 at the break.

The two sides traded goals in the third with Bowdoin striking on the man-advantage. Van Krueger (St. Louis, Mo.) took a pass from behind the net and broke through Endicott goalie Eric Hagarty (Sudbury, Mass.) who got a piece of the low shot. The Gulls responded with a snipe from Jonathan Prentice (Chelmsford, Mass.) and that stuck inside the right post after beating Williamson.

Billy Bergner put the game away in the fourth quarter as he scored at the 12:14 and 5:38 marks to give Bowdoin a commanding 8-4 lead. Endicott would try to battle its way back, capitalizing on the man-advantage with a pair of goals just 32 seconds apart.

Brad Lipkvich (Madison, Conn.) ripped the top left corner from 15-yards and Prentice scored top shelf on a backdoor pass from Jack Curtis (Chelmsford, Mass.). The run would be cut short, however, as Bowdoin killed the man-up with a long possession and then put the finishing touches on the afternoon with a 12-yard shot by Owen Smith (Brunswick, Maine) that found its way under the crossbar for the 9-6 win.

Bergner led all scorers with four goals and one assist for five points. Russell Halliday had a goal and three helpers while Adam Tracy had a pair of goals and one assist. Chris Williamson made 13 saves in the win.

Jonathan Prentice had two goals for the hosts while four others netted a single tally. Jack Curtis had two assists while Eric Hagarty made nine saves.

Endicott will have its hands full on Tuesday when the Gulls travel to Medford, Mass. for a 7:00 p.m. match-up with No. 6 Tufts University. Bowdoin looks for its fourth straight win on Wednesday evening with a NESCAC game against Bates.
