Phillips Leads Le Moyne to Win over Longwood in Detroit

Detroit, Mich. Junior Michelle Phillips (Johnson City, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) registered six points on four goals and two assists to lead the Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team to a 16-11 win over Longwood on Saturday afternoon at the University of Detroit Mercy's Titan Field.

The two teams split the first six goals of the game. Page Farmer and Cara O'Brien gave the Lancers a 2-0 lead 5:36 into the contest. The Dolphins then responded with a pair of goals in a span of 22 seconds by freshman Gabrielle Kamide (Deferiet, N.Y./Carthage) and Phillips. Morgan Illian answered back with a goal off a feed from Farmer to give Longwood its last lead of the game.

Senior Jackie Lundblad (Marietta, N.Y./Marcellus) evened the score at three apiece with a goal off a pass from junior Mia Valletta (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna). Phillips found the back of the net off a free-position shot at the 17:13 mark to put the Dolphins ahead 4-3. After Amanda Bereznay tied the score at four, the Valletta and Kamide scored consecutive goals off free-position shots to give Le Moyne the lead for good.

Karli Brentlinger pulled the Lancers within 6-5 with 13:26 left, but the Dolphins answered back with three straight goals. Freshman Kelly Condon (Victor, N.Y./Canandaigua) scored off a pass from Phillips for the first goal. Phillips and classmate Nerissa Barzee (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) then scored six seconds apart to give Le Moyne a 9-5 lead. Jamie Brentlinger and Kesley Dean each netted unassisted goals for the Lancers to pull Longwood within 9-7 at the intermission.

Phillips and Barzee each scored over the opening 13:20 of the second half, while Bereznay and Farmer tallied for Longwood as the two teams split the first four goals of the second half. Illian scored an unassisted goal at the 15:05 mark to pull Longwood within 11-10, but the Dolphins responded with three straight goals to put the game away.

Barzee, Lundblad and Valletta scored the goals for Le Moyne, while junior Leah Lazarz (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) registered the assist on Lundblad's goal. Illian scored her third goal of the game at the 7:38 mark to end the Le Moyne run, but Barzee and junior Rebekah Elmer (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) tallied goals to cap the game's scoring.

Sophomore Kelly Fucillo (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) made a season-high 18 saves in between the pipes for the Dolphins. Juli Liebig made two saves and allowed nine goals in 22:54, while Eliza Coughter stopped six shots and allowed seven goals in 37:06.

Le Moyne (9-5), which improved to 5-3 on the road this season, closes out the season at Boston College on May 1 at 1:00 p.m.

DETROIT, Mich. The Longwood University women's lacrosse team fell to Le Moyne College 16-11 on Saturday afternoon in a neutral-site matchup in Detroit, Michigan. The Lancers (6-8) were led by junior Morgan Illian/Salisbury, Md. (Parkside) with three goals and two assists. Longwood returns to action on Sunday, April 18, when they face the University of Detroit Mercy at 12:00 p.m. in Detroit.

The Lancers scored a pair of goals in the first six minutes, one by senior Page Farmer/Richmond (St. Catherine's) and the other by junior Cara O'Brien/Arlington (Bishop O'Connell) to take the early 2-0 lead with 24:24 remaining in the first half. The Dolphins answered with a pair of goals to tie the game. Illian scored her first goal of the game to give Longwood the 3-2 lead with 21:58 remaining in the half.

Le Moyne scored two more goals to take the 4-3 lead with 17:13 remaining in the half. Junior Amanda Bereznay/Gwynn Oak, Md. (Setan Keough) scored less than a minute later to tie the game at 4-4 but Le Moyne scored five of the next six goals, including two just six seconds apart, to pull away to a 9-5 lead. Freshman Jamie Brentlinger/Odenton, Md. (Arundel) and junior Kesley Dean/Centreville, Md. (Queen Anne's) each scored in the final four minutes of the first half to cut the Longwood deficit to 9-7 at halftime.
