Castleton State Rolls to NEWLA Win over Becker

Castleton, VT - The Castleton State College womens lacrosse team opened up a 13-1 halftime lead and cruised to a 24-2 win over Becker College Saturday afternoon in New England Womens Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) action at Spartan Stadium.

Castleton (9-4, 4-1 NEWLA) out-shot the Hawks 40-12 for the game and forced 23 turnovers in the lopsided win.

The Spartan offense had 12 different scorers, led by Jennifer Macari (Central Islip, NY) with three goals and two assists. Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, NY) added three goals and one assist while Nicole Adams (Rutland, VT) added three goals.

Elizabeth Haggerty (Centerport, NY), Corinne Healy (Jefferson Township, NJ), Stephanie Pearce (Shoreham, NY), Jessica Taplin (Barre, VT), Amy Costa (Bristol, RI) and Stephanie Paproski (Newtown, CT) each tallied two goals.

Nicole Lijana (Moorestown, NJ) and Morgan Hazen (Woodstock, VT) each scored for Becker (3-8, 0-5 NEWLA).

The Spartans scored the first eight goals of the contest, with Marie VanDerKar (Manchestere, VT) earning the opening draw control and racing down the field for the first strike just 18 seconds into the game. Hazen broke through for the first Hawk tally with 14:37 left in the opening half, but Castleton rattled off the next 15 goals in succession to put the game away.

Lily Derbyshire (Little Compton, RI) earned the win in goal, stopping five shots over the opening 30 minutes. Rebecca Duszak (Erieville, NY) made two saves in the second half.

Lindsey Peluso (Dudley, MA) made 10 saves in the loss.

Castleton will play host to University of Maine-Farmington tomorrow at 12 noon, in non-conference action. Becker will play host to Pine Manor on April 20 at 6:30 p.m.
