Denver Flattens Fresno to Clinch MPSF No. 1 Seed

DENVER The Pioneers wrapped up their regular season home schedule with an 18-2 victory over Fresno State on a drizzly Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

It was the fourth-straight victory for Denver, which improves to 11-4 on the season and clinching the top seed in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament with a perfect 5-0 record.

"We had a strong effort today," head coach Liza Kelly said. "It was especially nice that the seniors got a win and all had good games on senior day."

Senior midfielder Lexi Sanders (Greenwood Village, Colo.) led the way for Denver with a hat trick and three assists, while senior midfielder Ali Flury (Arnold, Md.) and redshirt freshman Kara Secora (Denver, Colo.) both had two goals and two assists.

Seniors Natasha Davies (Annapolis, Md.) and Megan Zeman (Littleton, Colo.) both scored their first goals of the season.

The Pioneers were strong in the first half, scoring 13 goals and out-shooting the Bulldogs (0-11, 0-4 MPSF) 27-5.

Denver tacked on five goals in the second half and held the Bulldogs scoreless to seal the 18-2 victory.

Senior goalkeeper Katie Gold (Centennial, Colo.) had her first start of the season and earned her first win of the season.

The Pioneers, who are 8-1 at home this season, were 11 for 13 on clears and outshot the Bulldogs 35-6.

This game marks the eighth time in Denver history that the Pioneers have held an opponent to two or fewer goals, and Gold and Ashley Harman (Boyertown, Pa.) have combined for three of those efforts.

Natalie Harrington and Amira Ferrell each scored a goal for Fresno State.

Seniors Flury, Davies, Zeman, Sanders and Gold were honored before the game in recognition of senior day.

Denver wraps up the regular season at Oregon on April 24.
