Mercy Cruises to 10-4 Win over Chestnut Hill

In an East Coast Conference showdown, Mercy College defeated Chestnut Hill, 10-4, on Saturday, April, 17, at Purchase College. Leading the way for the Mavericks was freshman Mike Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon), who scored five goals and added an assist.

Mercy opened the scoring just 2:17 into the game when Marzocca took a feed from Alex Martello (Montville, N.J./Montville) and found the back of the net. CHC's Nate Tharp answered shortly after with a man-up goal, to tie the game at 1-1. The Mavericks then went on a three-goal barrage in the rest of the first quarter to take a commanding 4-1 lead after 15 minutes.

Chestnut Hill got a pair of second quarter goals to cut the lead to 4-3 at the intermission. In the third quarter, Mercy jumped all over Chestnut Hill, scoring three times. James Bugeya (Lakeland, N.Y./Lakeland) scored just 21 seconds in to extend the lead to 5-3. Marzocca and John Fitzpatrick (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) added scores, and Mercy led 7-3 after three.

In the fourth quarter, CHC cut the lead to 7-4, then three straight Maverick goals sealed the win, and the 10-4 final score.

For the game, Marzocca led all scorers with five goals and an assist. Fitzpatrick added two goals and an assist for three points, while Bugeya had one goal and a pair of assists. Erik Grady (Medford, N.Y./Bellport) and Sean Wallin (Mountain Lakes, N.Y./Mountain Lakes) each scored once. Long-stick defender Michael Munch (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) added a pair of assists, while Martello added one helper.

In goal, freshman T.J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) made seven saves for the win.

In the ECC, Mercy is now in eighth place with a 2-4 record, while CHC is in tenth at 0-7. Mercy will travel to New Hampshire on Wednesday, April 21, to face Saint Anselm.
