Bates Beats Colorado College to Even Record

LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore Joan O'Neill (Westwood, Mass.) scored four goals and added two assists to lead the Bates College women's lacrosse team to a 16-4 win over visiting Colorado College on Sunday morning at Campus Avenue Field.

Bates evened its record back to .500 at 5-5. The visiting Tigers dropped to 7-5 and finished their three-game trip to Maine 0-3 against Bates, Bowdoin and Colby.

Bates took 27 shots compared to 14 for Colorado College. The Bobcats converted six of seven free-position opportunities, while the Tigers were 0 for 4 in the same category.

The Bobcats led 5-0 only eight minutes and 18 seconds into the game, with two goals apiece by sophomore Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.) and first-year Jenn Brallier (Chambersburg, Pa.) as well as one by O'Neill on an assist by senior Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead, Mass.). O'Neill supplied the assist on both of Brallier's goals in a three-minute span.

Colorado College got on the board wtih 20:47 left in the period as senior Maggie Defanti (Kennebunk, Maine) fed sophomore Grace Maloney (Wilmette, Ill.) to make it 5-1. But Bates responded with another five-goal flurry over a span of seven minutes and 49 seconds. O'Neill netted two of them on free-position shots.

First-year K.C. Collier (Hershey, Pa.) netted her second goal of the year with a deft flick to make it 8-1, and junior Briana Gross (North Andover, Mass.) made it 9-1 on another flick, a pass from senior Molly Dilworth (Yarmouth, Maine). With 11:33 left in the period, O'Neill's third goal of the game made it 10-1 Bates with 11:33 left in the first period.

Though Bates was on the brink of moving the game into a clock-running situation with a 10-goal lead, the Tigers held the Bobcats scoreless for the remainder of the period and eight minutes into the second period as well. Meanwhile the Tigers scored two straight to open the second period, unassisted tallies by first-year Frances Staadt (Rockville, Ind.) and Maloney.

A free-position goal by sophomore Maggie Reilly (Wellesley, Mass.) with 22:00 left in the second period ended Bates' mini-drought, beginning a string of three straight goals by Bates that put the clock into constant running with 15:35 left, as Maciewicz converted another FPS goal, her 12th this season, soon after she set up a goal by junior Emily Howe (Carlisle, Mass.) with her 10th assist of the season.

The Tigers returned the clock to normalcy with 11:47 left, however, as Defanti's second assist set up a tally by junior Gioia Garden (Shaker Heights, Ohio) to make it 13-4.

O'Neill netted her third free-position goal of the game with 8:07 left to regain the 10-goal lead. The sophomore now has 28 goals and 14 assists on the season, both team highs. Dilworth scored on a Gross assist with 1:43 left, and Dannis netted an unassisted tally with five seconds left in the game, her third goal of the game and 20th of the season, to make it 16-4.

Both starting goalies, Bates junior Mara Krueger (St. Louis, Mo.) and Colorado College first-year Abby Fink (Plymouth, Minn.), collected four saves in the game.

Bates plays a non-conference game tomorrow at the University of New England, starting at 4:00 p.m.
