Robert Morris Edges Past Central Connecticut State

New Britain, Conn. April 18, 2010 The Robert Morris University Colonials ended the 2010 regular season, edging past the Central Conn. State Blue Devils, 15-14, on Sunday afternoon. The game consisted of four ties and two lead changes.

Senior Alana Beck (Carle Place, N.Y./Old Dominion) finished her career breaking an RMU single-game record by scoring seven goals in the contest and also added one assist and six draw controls. She moved up to second-place in the single season goal record books with 43 scores.

Sophomore Colleen O'Donnell (Portland, Ore./St. Mary's Academy) and senior Ali Gibbons (Candia, N.H./Manchester) each added three goals in the win and junior Ashley Trombetta (Sykesville, Md./Century) led the squad with four helpers. Freshman Tara Southworth (Westminster, Md./Westminster High) captured a career-high four caused turnovers and added two ground balls.

Betsy Vendel led the Blue Devils with four goals and three assists and Meaghan McCurry finished with three goals. Michele Conway added two goals and three assists in the close contest.

Gibbons and Beck opened up the first five minutes of play by each converting on an unassisted play. The Blue Devils cut into the two-goal advantage when Vendel scored her first goal of the day on a free-position shot. However, Robert Morris dominated the next 10 minutes of play by scoring three goals to gain a 5-1 advantage.

With 10:35 left to play in the half Ashley Mara scored on a free position shot, which was followed with another CCSU goal with 9:37 left to play. O'Donnell and Gibbons captured the next two goals to give RMU a 7-3 lead with 7:30 left on the clock.

The Blue Devils came to life in the last six minutes and scored four unanswered goals to knot the score for the first time, 7-7, heading into the second half.

Robert Morris quickly took the lead back when Beck scored her 39th goal of the season just 24 seconds into half, but Central Connecticut reeled off another four goals with two coming from McCurry to steal the lead 11-8 with 19:17 left to play.

Beck came to the rescue for the Colonials throughout the next nine minutes and scored RMU's next four goals, while the Blue Devils only found the net once to deadlock the game, 12-12.

With 8:51 left to play, O'Donnell scored her third goal of the game to give Robert Morris back the lead, 13-12. The Blue Devils tied the score for the fourth time of the contest when Vendel connected on a shot off an assist from Conway.

Gibbons and junior Lynette Gomez (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township) gave Robert Morris a two-goal cushion with goals at the 23:03 and 26:54 marks. CCSU made last effort to overtake the Colonials when Conway scored with 1:53 left to play, but the Colonial defense remained strong and prevented the score to earn the win.

Erica Webb (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) tallied eight saves in the contest, while Blue Devil goalie Erin Delancey finished with 15 saves. Robert Morris was 1 for 3 on free position shots, while CCSU converted on 5 of 7 chances.

With the win the Colonials conclude the season with a 7-8 overall record and a 5-4 league record, while Central Conn. State dropped to 5-9 overall and 1-8 in league play.
