UC Davis Drops Key MPSF Match to Oregon

DAVIS, Calif. -- Midfielders Alex Breiner and Jana Drummond each scored four goals to lead Oregon to a 14-6 win over UC Davis in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse action at Aggie Stadium Sunday afternoon. For the Aggies, junior Gina Hoffmire registered her third straight hat trick.

UC Davis drops to 9-4 for the year, evening its MPSF record to 2-2. The Ducks improve to 7-9 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Junior Christina Corsa added a goal and assist for the Aggies. Senior Molly Peterson and freshman Hannah Mirza also scored a goal apiece. Additionally, Peterson tallied four ground balls and two draw controls, while junior Lauren Boyle picked up two ground balls and caused three UO turnovers.

UC Davis struck first in the game as freshman Anna Geissbuhler's won draw allowed Hoffmire to run virtually unchallenged to the Duck cage. However, Oregon scored four of the next five -- mostly with a player advantage due to two Aggie yellow cards -- to claim a 5-2 lead at the 16:55 mark. Then after Peterson's goal at 13:54 cut the deficit to two, the Ducks tallied four unanswered to take a 9-3 lead into the halftime break. UO's first-half edge largely came from outdrawing its host 9-4 before the break.

Corsa tallied her lone goal just 20 ticks after the second-half starting draw, slashing through the fan before striking from the right side. But Breiner converted an eight-meter attempt in the 34th minute to send the Duck lead to 10-4, then Drummond's midfield steal led her second goal at 24:31, pushing the deficit to seven. Drummond scored two more in the final seven minutes to help UO wrap up its win.

Oregon held an 18-6 edge in shots during the first half, but UC Davis matched its guest 12-12 after the break. The Aggies also regrouped on draws in the second half, claiming six of the nine.

Sunday's contest served as the home finale for seniors Peterson, Molly Lapolla and Britt Farquharson, who were honored prior to the game. Farquharson, a native of Mississauga, Ontario, was also recognized with the playing of the Canadian national anthem during pregame festivities.

The Aggies continue MPSF play with games at Fresno State on Friday and Stanford on Sunday.
