Sussman's Seven Points Sends Dartmouth Past Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Senior Ari Sussman and freshman Chris Costabile each scored five goals to lead Dartmouth to an 18-13 victory against Vermont in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Moulton Winder Field on Tuesday afternoon. Freshman Drew Philie (Sandwich, Mass.) scored five times and added two assists in the loss for the Catamounts, who dropped to 3-10 (2-1 America East) with the loss.

Juniors Derek Lichtfuss (Lutherville, Md.), Kyle Sminkey (White River Jct., Vt.) and Liam Thomas (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.), sophomores Rory O'Connor (Haverford, Pa.), Tom Frasca (Medfield, Mass.), Alex Plavner (Arnold, Md.) and Geoff Worley (Coronado, Calif.) as well as freshman A.J. Masson (Newmarket, Ont.) each scored a goal for the Catamounts. Sophomore goalie David Barton (Hanover, Mass.) made 13 saves before giving way to Plavner, who finished with four saves in the final 14:23.

The Catamounts and Big Green exchanged goals to begin the opening quarter before Sussman scored back-to-back tallies to give Dartmouth a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes.

Philie scored three of Vermont's five goals in the second quarter but Dartmouth countered with five of its own goals to keep an 8-6 cushion at halftime.

It was all Big Green in the third quarter as they outscored the Catamounts 6-1 to take a 14-7 advantage. Sussman and Costabile each scored twice in the quarter.

The Big Green opened up a 17-7 lead in the final quarter before a late rally by the Catamounts fell short. Vermont scored six of the final seven goals in the game but could get no closer than 18-13.

Dartmouth out shot Vermont 59-33 and went 18 for 21 on clears. Tom Frasca went 18 for 34 on draws for the Catamounts while freshman Garrett Virtue (Rye, N.H.) added a pair of assists.

Vermont returns to America East play on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at home against UMBC. Saturday is "Senior Day" at Moulton Winder Field. The Catamount seniors will be honored before the game. Saturday is also UPS team poster day and there will be a postgame autograph session.

Notes: Drew Philie leads the team in scoring with 24 goals and 21 assists for 45 points ... Geoff Worley has at least one point in 12 of 13 games and is second on the team in scoring with 31 points ... Dartmouth leads the all-time series against Vermont 16-4.

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Senior captain Ari Sussman (New Haven, Conn.) helped Dartmouth to an 18-13 win over Vermont with seven points on a season-high five goals and two assists as the Big Green snapped a two-game skid on Tuesday.

Dartmouth (4-6) also got five goals from freshman Chris Costabile (Sykesville, Md.) and senior long-stick Casey Hingtgen (Carlsbad, Calif.) had an incredible game with a career-high two goals, 12 faceoff wins and seven ground balls. Sussman had the team-high in ground balls with eight. Sophomore Kip Dooley (Minneapolis, Minn.) returned to form with two goals, both coming on the man-up.

Sophomore Fergus Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.) earned the win with nine stops between the pipes, while senior Michael Novosel (Somers, N.Y.) got some time in net, making two saves. Dartmouth finished with 59 shots, which was the most since the Big Green put 51 shots on Notre Dame back in 2005.

Vermont (3-10) saw Drew Philie, who won America East Player of the Week honors yesterday, add seven points himself with five goals and two assists. In the game, the Catamounts had nine different scorers. David Barton took the loss in net with 13 stops in front of the cage.
