Mars Scores 14 Goals as Centenary Clinches Second Seed

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. (April 20, 2010) Senior Megan Mars (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) set a Centenary women's lacrosse single-game record with 14 goals and 15 points while leading the Lady Cyclones to a 20-18 win over Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) foe Gwynedd Mercy (6-7, 5-2 CSAC), Tuesday in Gwynedd Valley, Pa. With the win, CC (11-1, 7-1 CSAC) clinched the second seed in the CSAC Tournament and will receive a first-round bye.

The game featured six ties and five lead changes. Centenary outshot its opponent, 42-32, grabbed 26 groundballs to GMC's 17 and recorded only 11 turnovers while Gwynedd-Mercy lost 25. The Griffins won the draw control battle, finishing with 18 to the Cyclones' nine.

The previous single-game high in scoring for a Cyclone was nine by Michelle Garone on March 11, 2009, at Misericordia. Nicole Becker set the previous single-game high in points with 11 against Wilkes on March 27, 2007. Mars shattered both records with 14 goals and one assists. She also tallied two groundballs and three draw controls.

Senior Kiti Ovaskainen (Helsinki, Finland/Vaskivuoren Lukio) finished with three goals and five groundballs. Freshmen Nicole Judd (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette Senior) (two goals, one assist) and Allie Swartz (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) (one goal and two assists) each played well for the Cyclones. Goalie LeslieAnn Pritchard (Port Byron, N.Y./Port Byron) stopped six shots in the win. GMC was led by Shannon Carabba, who tallied five goals and three assists in a losing effort.

A back-and-forth first half ended with the Griffins holding a one-goal lead, at 11-10. Carabba stretched the lead to two goals in the opening minute of the second period, but then Centenary took over. Mars scored three times and Judd and Swartz each tallied once as CC took a 15-12 advantage. GMC cut the lead to one three times, the last with 2:38 remaining, before Mars scored with 59 seconds to go to give Centenary its 20-18 win.

Centenary returns to action on Tuesday, April 27, with a non-conference game at Rutgers-Camden at 4:00 p.m.
