No. 20 Hampden-Sydney Sinks the Captains

NEWPORT NEWS, VA (April 21, 2010)- The #20 nationally-ranked Hampden-Sydney lacrosse Tigers ran their winning streak to five games today with a convincing 16-8 win at Christopher Newport. The victory also maintained the Tigers' perfect road record on the season.

On a day that started in a driving rain, Hampden-Sydney started slow, but overcame an early deficit to assert their dominance by halftime. The Tigers were led by sophomore Micah Keller (Richmond, VA/Christchurch) who scored three goals and added two assists, and classmate Nate Cundy (Midlothian, VA/James River) who also added a hat trick.

Christopher Newport was able to get on the scoreboard first and did a nice job early of containing the Tiger attack. It wasn't until almost halfway through the quarter that Hampden-Sydney finally found the net with a goal from freshman Ryan Martin (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) on an assist from junior Cole Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate).

The Tigers followed that with a goal from sophomore Carter Mavromatis (Virginia Beach, VA/Cape Henry) that was set up by senior captain Kyle Jett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond Suffolk). Cundy struck for the first time off of a pass from Martin four minutes later, before senior Kevin Coats (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) scored an unassisted goal to make the score 4-1 at the end of the quarter.

On the second quarter face-off, freshman Brad Mostowy (Atlanta, GA/Trinity Pawling) controlled the draw, and raced through the Captain defense before finding an open Cundy in front of the cage for the easy put away. CNU answered back with two straight goals in man-up situations however, to draw withing two at 5-3, but Jett responded with a goal before Cundy scored his third of the day on a setup from Keller.

The Captains remained resilient, though, scoring two more quick goals to bring the score to 7-5, but that was as close as they would get the remainder of the game. Keller proceeded to go on a personal rampage, scoring three straight goals to blow the game wide open, with assists coming from Martin and sophomore Ben Clarke (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy). Clarke then added a goal of his own on an assist from Keller with a minute and a half left to play to make the halftime score 11-5 in favor of the Tigers.

As the sun came out to start the second half, the Tiger defense stepped up their game, holding the Captains scoreless for all but six seconds of the third quarter, thanks in large part to some stellar goalkeeping from freshman Cody Hornung (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Lower Merion). Hawthorne scored two goals in the period on assists from Mavromatis and Jett to make the score after three periods of play 13-6.

The Tigers added three more goals in the fourth quarter, the first coming from freshman Alex Clay (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) on an assist from senior captain Daniel Martin (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle), marking his first career assist. Freshman Jess Hawthorne (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) added an unassisted goal, before sophomore Kyle Fox (Manassas, VA/Osbourn Park) scored his first tally of the season on an assist from Coats to give Hampden-Sydney the 16-8 win.

On the day, Hampden-Sydney outshot CNU 48-36, and grabbed 31 ground balls to 30 for the Captains. 11 different players scored goals for the Tigers, their second highest number in a game this season. Mostowy led Hampden-Sydney with four ground balls, and junior defenseman Peter Foley (McLean, VA/Langley) caused three turnovers to lead the Tigers on the defensive end.

With the win, the Tigers improve to 11-4 on the season. Hampden-Sydney will conclude their regular season on Saturday, April 24th as they travel to Randolph-Macon to take on the Yellow Jackets. Face-off for the game is set for 1:00 pm.
