Manhattanville Wins MAC Contest vs. Misericordia

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Freshman Matt Corey (Merrimack, N.H.) finished with a career-high five goals as the Manhattanville men's lacrosse team picked up its fourth conference victory of the season over Misericordia University, 15-9, on Wednesday afternoon at GoValiants.Com Field.

The Valiants also got great a five–point performance from senior Joey Hasbrouck (Wantagh, N.Y.) with four goals and an assist. A pair of Valiants also finished with a three-point game, as sophomore Joe Daly (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored a hat trick and senior Andrew McMillin (Garden City, N.Y.) had three assists. Adding to the multi-point player list were junior Mike Strauss (Newark, Del.) and freshman Joey Bacarella (Trumbull, Conn.) with two points each.

The Cougars scored the first two goals of the contest with a man-up goal by Zach Buckley at 10:48 and then the games second goal scored buy Kyle Calabro at 9:46. The Valiants scored three consecutive times to take a 3-2 lead with goals coming from Corey, Hasbrouck and Daly. Misericordia tied the contest with 2:52 left before Corey netted his second goal of the contest with 1:21 remaining as the Valiants finished the first quarter with an 8-5 edge in shots. Despite the 2-0 early deficit, the Valiants forced eight turnovers by the cougars and were successful on each of their four clear attempts, while scooping up nine grounders.

Both teams combined for seven goals in the second quarter again, with the Valiants taking an 8-6 lead into the break. Kyle Calabro tied the contest at four for the Cougars, as both teams traded goals until the Valiants took a 7-6 lead with 2:19 left. Manhattanville got goals from Strauss and Corey early in the quarter, with Strauss scoring the squads second man-up goal of the contest. Corey scored his third goal of the contest with just five seconds remaining in the half, as the Valiants once again outshot the Cougars, 15-7, in the second quarter.

The Valiant defense stepped up in the third quarter, blanking the cougars in the third frame and allowed only five shots to be taken. Manhattanville tacked on four goals in the quarter, with Hasbrouck scoring twice and single goals from Strauss and Corey. Hasbrouck's goal with 52 seconds remaining in the quarter was the result of a man-up chance, the team's third of the day. For the second time in consecutive quarters, Corey scored with five seconds remaining for his fifth of the night.

Manhattanville finished its eight consecutive goal streak in the final quarter with a pair of goals in the early stages from Bacarella and Hasbrouck. The Cougars added three goals in the last frame, but Daly's third goal of the game came on a man-down chance with 4:32 remaining, as the Valiants took a 15-8 lead. The Cougars scored once more in the final two minutes, but fell 15-9.

In goal, senior Andrew Predun (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) made 11 saves on 17 shots in 50 minutes. Freshman Dom Poletto (Denver, Colo.) finished the remaining 10 minutes of the contest and made a save. Misericordia also use two goalies with starter Ryan Kay played the first quarter and allowed four goals and made way for Michael Orabona who finished the remaining three quarters, allowing 11 goals on 22 shots.

Manhattanville (5-8, 4-4 MAC) will travel to Messiah on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. start with the Falcons. The Valiants will conclude the regular-season home schedule on Tuesday against Widener at 7:00 p.m. Misericordia (3-9, 1-7 MAC) will take on DeSales on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
