Weekley Sets Millersville All-Time Record in Win vs. Kutztown

Millersville, Pa. Millersville senior Liz Weekley (Pottstown/Pottstown) registered five goals and two assists en route to a 19-8 win over Kutztown in PSAC East women's lacrosse action, and in the process, she became Millersville's all-time leader in points with 222.

Weekley entered the game needing three points to surpass Stephanie McClay's mark of 217 that was set in 1988. It didn't take long for Weekley to move past McClay. In just over five minutes, she registered a pair of goals and an assist.

Now only five goals short of also tying the career goals record, Weekley also moved into 12th in PSAC history and has one game left in her Millersville career.

Weekley stole the show with her record-setting performance, but senior Katie DiRico (Lancaster/Hempfield) quietly netted a career-high seven goals and handed out an assist, helping the Marauders' record to 3-10, 2-7 PSAC East, while the Golden Bears fell to 3-13, 0-9 PSAC East.

Weekley got action rolling, scoring the first goal of the game just over 1:30 into play off an assist from Morgan Mangiaruga (North Wales/North Penn). DiRico recorded her first goal just 20 seconds later to give Millersville a 2-0 lead. Kutztown responded with a goal, but Weekley found Kelsey Schmoltze (Hatboro/Upper Moreland) one minute later.

The Golden Bears picked up their second goal of the half, but the Marauders immediately started a six-goal run that spanned six minutes. Weekley accounted for a goal and an assist, and DiRico registered three goals.

Millersville tallied four more goals and Kutztown picked up three as the squads went into halftime with Millersville leading, 13-5.

DiRico and Weekley each recorded unassisted goals less than a minute apart to begin the second half and build a 10-goal margin for the Black and Gold. Emily Savini scored her second goal for Kutztown, but DiRico quickly answered, finding her way past goalkeeper Karly Waltman for the sixth time.

The Golden Bears mustered two more goals in the contest, but they could not keep pace with the explosive Millersville offense.

DiRico and Weekley combined for 12 goals and three assists. Mangiaruga chipped in two goals along with her assist, and Schmoltze recorded a goal and two assists.

Waltman stopped 13 shots for Kutztown. Millersville goalkeeper Courtney Haggerty (Horsham/Hatboro Horsham) set aside 12 shots and Madison Allan (Pottstown/Pottstown) totaled six saves.

The Marauders host West Chester on Saturday, April 24 for their final game of the regular season. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
