Maritime Drops Skyline Game to No. 18 Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (April 21, 2010) The Maritime men's lacrosse team lost to nationally-ranked Montclair State, 14-4, Wednesday night in Skyline Conference action at the Red Hawks' Sprague Field. In defeat, the Privateers fall to 5-8 (3-2 Skyline), while Montclair, which won its 11th straight-game, improves to 12-3 (5-0 Skyline) and captures the Skyline regular season championship.

Junior Alexander Korb (Islip, N.Y.) scored twice for the Privateers, while senior Stephen Doherty (Yorktown, N.Y.) and junior Ryan Korb (Islip, N.Y.) tallied the two other goals in the loss. Juniors Seth Collins (Owego, N.Y.) and Jesse de'Boer (Ridge, N.J.) picked up the only two assists on the day for Maritime.

The Red Hawks scored the first five goals of the game before Doherty found the back of the net for the last goal of the opening quarter. In the second quarter, Montclair State expanded its lead to 7-1 when Alex Korb scored off an assist from Collins at 10:50. However, the Red Hawks would answer back just over a minute later to take an 8-2 lead, an advantage they took into the locker room.

Ryan Korb scored the first goal of the second half to cut the deficit to 8-3, but the No. 18 team in the country would score the next six goals. The Maritime defense was strong in the final quarter, holding Montclair State to its lowest shot total in a period, seven. Alex Korb picked up his second goal of the game with 2:54 remaining to end the scoring for the night.

In goal for the Privateers, senior Colin Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn.) made nine saves in 38:05 of playing time and was credited with the loss. Junior Keith Messina (West Sayville, N.Y.) played just under 22 minutes in goal and made three saves. Defenseman sophomore Steven Tonn (Wantagh, N.Y.) was Maritime's leader with six ground balls on the day.

For the Red Hawks, Tyler Meth scored a game-high four goals, while Robert Sinicola led all players with eight points (three goals, five assists). Goalie Andrew Rosado played three quarters and made six saves to claim the victory.

Up next for the Maritime men's lacrosse team is the finale game of the regular season, a road conference matchup with Kean University this Saturday, April 24. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Cougars' Union, N.J. campus.
