No. 4 Limestone Advances by Pfeiffer to CC Title Game

Charlotte, N.C - Fourth-ranked Limestone outscored Pfeiffer 6-1 in the opening quarter to propel the top-seeded Saints to a 10-4 win over the fourth-seeded Falcons on Friday in the semifinals of the 2010 Conference Carolinas Men's Lacrosse Tournament. Limestone, which has won eight straight games, will play the Queens University of Charlotte/Belmont Abbey semifinal winner in Sunday's 4:00 p.m., title game.

Limestone senior Mike Poerstel (Annapolis, MD) led the way today scoring three goals and was one of six Saints to tally a goal. Freshman Riley Loewen (Burnaby, British Columbia) and sophomore Jackson Decker (Port Moody, British, Columbia) scored two each while sophomore Randy Waugh (Severna Park, MD), junior Sam Buppert (Eldersburg, MD) and senior Jake Rogalia (Liverpool, N.Y.) registered one each. Jackson and Rogalia also added one assist apiece as did Brian Zwick (Dublin, OH) along with senior Teddy Prager (Seaford, N.Y.).

Limestone outshot the Falcons 36-22 including 14-3 in the opening quarter when five different Saints found the back of the net giving Limestone a 6-1 lead after the first period.

The Saints held a slim advantage in ground balls at 21-20 with Zwick corralling a team and game tying high three. Limestone was at .952 on its clear attempts at 20 of 21, and limited Pfeiffer to only .538% at 14 of 26.

Limestone was 10 of 17 at the center "x" with senior Sean Bennett (East Moriches, N.Y.) taking all face-off attempts. Saints sophomore keeper Steve Gartelman (Seaford, N.Y.) made 11 saves between the pipes.

Limestone, the top-ranked team in the NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse South Region rankings, is now 10-0 in the region and 10-1 overall. The Saints, as noted earlier, will play in the tournament championship on Sunday at 4:00 p.m., against the Queens/Belmont Abbey winner. The Saints posted road wins over each in route to the regular season title besting the Royals 15-10 (3/31) and the Crusaders 13-10 (4/10).

Limestone heads to Sunday seeking its 11th conference tournament championship in the last 12 seasons. The 2010 Conference Carolinas Men's Lacrosse Tournament is being played at the Queens Sports Complex at Marion Diehl Park, which is located at 2229 Tyvola Road in Charlotte (N.C.).

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Pfeiffer University dug themselves into a deep hole early on as top-seeded Limestone scored six first period goals en route to a 10-4 win over the fourth-seeded Falcons in semifinal action of the 2010 Conference Carolinas men's lacrosse tournament. The victory put the Saints, nationally-ranked #4, into Sunday championship game at 1:00 p.m. improving to 10-1 overall while the Falcons end their season at 8-9.

Conference Carolinas player of the year Mike Poerstel put the Saints on the board just 14 seconds into the contest. Pfeiffer's Justin Rose square the contest just 1:09 later on an assist from Kory Lutes. Limestone closed out the half with five straight tallies as Poerstel put his second of three home on an assist from Teddy Prager. Randy Waugh, Sam Buppert and Jake Rogalia each hit unassisted before Jackson Decker finished the quarter on an assist from Brian Zwick.

Sam McDaniel scored for the Falcons halfway through the second period as Pfeiffer trailed 6-2 at the half. Starting the third, Riley Loewen struck twice on assists from Decker and Rogalia before Derrick Ensor made it an 8-3 contest at the 5:35 mark of the third. Lutes cut the lead in half at 8-4 just 40 seconds later before Decker and Poerstel scored the final pair of goals in the Saints six point win.
