UMBC Tops Vermont 8-7 in Overtime

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Senior Maxx Davis scored with 1:27 left in overtime to give UMBC an 8-7 victory against Vermont in America East men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Moulton Winder Field. Sophomore David Barton (Hanover, Mass.) made 10 saves, while freshman Drew Philie (Sandwich, Mass.) record four goals for the Catamounts, who dropped to 3-11 (2-2 America East) with the loss.

UMBC improved to 4-7 (3-1 America East) with the win in a contest that included seven ties and eight lead changes.

Philie gave Vermont a 7-6 lead with 8:38 left in the final quarter on a feed from freshman Garrett Virtue (Rye, N.H.). Philie had five points in the game to reach the 50-point plateau on the season (28g, 22a).

The Retrievers tied the game with 2:14 remaining on an unassisted goal by Kyle Wimer. Then in overtime Davis recorded his third goal of the game with 1:27 left to give UMBC its seventh straight win against the Catamounts.

In a contest where neither team lead by more than a goal, it was Vermont that took a 4-3 lead to halftime. Philie scored the first three goals of the half for the Catamounts before sophomore Cal Case (Columbus, Ohio) scored on a pass from sophomore Rory O'Connor (Haverford, Pa.) with 4:15 left in the second quarter to give Vermont a one-goal lead at intermission.

The Retrievers scored the only two goals in the third quarter to retake a 5-4 advantage. Davis scored with 3:31 left in the third to put UMBC back in front for the first time since the opening quarter.

O'Connor and sophomore Geoff Worley (Coronado, Calif.) also had goals for Vermont. O'Connor finished with three points while Worley had two points. Worley ranks second on the team in scoring this season with 33 points (15g, 18a) and has at least one point in 13 of 14 games.

UMBC out shot Vermont 37-15. The Catamounts were 2 for 3 in man-up situations while the Retrievers were 0 for 3.

Vermont completes the regular season next Saturday at Stony Brook at 7:00 p.m. The Catamounts can clinch a spot in the America East playoffs with a win against the Seawolves next Saturday or with a loss by Stony Brook tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Albany. The remaining America East playoff scenarios will be determined following the conclusion of the matchup between the Seawolves and Great Danes tonight.

Burlington, Vt.-UMBC senior midfielder Maxx Davis (Baltimore, Md./Friends School) scored an unassisted goal with 1:27 to play in the first overtime period to propel the Retrievers to an 8-7 victory over Vermont at Moulton-Winder Field.

The victory clinched a playoff berth in the four-team America East Tournament for UMBC, their seventh in a row in seven America East campaigns. The Retrievers (4-7, 3-1 America East) won their third straight game and temporarily denied the Catamounts (3-11, 2-2) a playoff berth.

Davis, a short-stick defensive midfielder, led the Retrievers by posting his first career three-goal game. Senior midfielder Kyle Wimer (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and sophomore attackman Rob Grimm (Black River,N.Y.) each had two goals for UMBC. Vermont freshman attackman Drew Philie led all scorers with four goals.

Neither team led by more than a goal and it was the Retrievers who needed a Wimer dodge and inside score with 2:14 remaining to knot the game at 7-all.

UMBC lost the opening face-off of overtime, but the Catamounts committed a turnover without getting a shot against Retriever freshman goalkeeper Adam Cohen (Arnold, Md./Severn School). After a Retriever time-out, Davis dodged left from up top and his hard, low shot beat Vermont netminder David Barton.
