SU Says Goodbye to Seniors with Upset of Unbeaten Drew

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Freshman Will Torrence (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) made 17 saves, including one with three seconds left in the game, to preserve Susquehanna University's 8–7 upset of Drew University in a Landmark Conference men's lacrosse game on Senior Day at Sassafras Fields on April 24.

Susquehanna (7–7, 2–3 Landmark) handed Drew (8–5, 4–1 Landmark) its first conference loss of the season. The Crusaders took the lead for good when sophomore midfielder Billy Spack (Arlington, Va., Yorktown) scored off of an assist from sophomore attack Dustin Breakey (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) to make the score 7–6 with 4 minutes, 23 seconds left in the final quarter.

Susquehanna then got a much-needed insurance goal after junior midfielder Ryan Oakes (North Yarmouth, Maine/Cheverus) single-handedly won the ensuing faceoff, ran down the field and found freshman attack Sean Ledwick (Weston, Conn./Weston) open near the goal. Ledwick scored for an 8–6 lead with 4:17 left.

Drew eventually brought the game to 8–7 with just 2:03 remaining, and the lead appeared to be in jeopardy when the Crusaders were whistled for a penalty with 42 seconds left.

But SU, which entered this week ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division III in man-down defense (.840) killed the final 30-second Drew advantage and got the late stop from Torrence to end the game.

Drew finished the contest 0 for 5 in man-up opportunities. Oakes finished with a game-high 11 faceoffs wins and 10 ground balls. The assist was the first of his career.

Susquehanna held a 3–2 lead after one quarter and a 4–3 lead at halftime. The game was tied at 5 heading into the fourth, and Drew held its last lead at 6–5 after scoring just 49 seconds into the final period.

Breakey scored off of an assist from sophomore midfielder Luke Delavan (Madison, N.J./Madison) to tie the game at 6 with 8:46 left in the game.

Breakey, Spack and Ledwick each finished with a team-high two goals. Breakey's three points led SU and tied for the game-high. Delavan had a game-high two assists.

Sophomore midfielder Matt Weiner (Bound Brook, N.J./Bridgewater–Raritan Regional) and freshman midfielder Jon Horbert (Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley) notched the Crusaders' other goals. Sophomore attack Tim Pastore (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) had the other SU assist.

Torrence played all 60 minutes to improve to 3–3 this year. His 10 second-half saves and five fourth-quarter stops were each game-highs.

SU's junior defender Jimmy Warburton (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) collected five ground balls. The teams tied with 30 ground balls each. The Crusaders held a 41–30 advantage in shots.

Next Game for Susquehanna: Wednesday, April 28, at Hood (non-conference game), 4:00 p.m.
