Johnston Helps Nazareth Dominate Elmira

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Freshman Alyssa Johnston (Canandaigua, NY) scored a career-high five goals and added three assists and senior Jennifer Young (Marcellus, NY) scored four times Sunday as host Nazareth dominated Elmira in an Empire 8 Conference women's lacrosse game, winning 21-7.

The victory was Nazareth's sixth in its last seven games and improved the Golden Flyers' overall record to 10-5. Nazareth also improved to 6-2 in conference games and will be the fourth seed for next month's E8 Conference Tournament at Ithaca. Elmira finished the regular season at 6-11 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

Nazareth scored early and often against the Soaring Eagles. The Golden Flyers scored the first seven goals of the game and 17 of the first 18 to win easily. Senior Nora Davis (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse, NY) won the opening draw control and scored just 10 seconds into the game to set the tone early. Young added the next two goals and Michelle Cook (Waterloo, NY) scored the next two after that. Davis and Young added the next two goals to build the 7-0 advantage.

After Jordan Donegan scored for Elmira, Nazareth scored seven in a row before the first half ended and three more to start the second half to make the score 17-1. Johnston scored three times in that stretch and added two assists. Young also added her fourth goal of the game on a free-position shot.

Nazareth continued to maintain a double-digit lead and the closing minutes were highlighted by the first goal of the season for freshman Kayleigh Pearson (Indian River/Theresa, NY) and sophomore Alyssa Whelan (Sachem North/Ronkonkoma, NY).

Nazareth had a 41-16 shooting advantage and a 23-14 edge in ground balls. Nazareth also won 18 draws to Elmira's 12. Senior Ann Sessler (Cazenovia, NY) and freshman Shelby Robinson (North Syracuse, NY) split time in goal and combined for four saves.

Nazareth will play at Ithaca May 8 at a time to be determined in the opening round of the E8 Tournament.
