Centenary Holds off Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. (April 27, 2010) The Centenary women's lacrosse team held off a pesky Rutgers-Camden squad, eventually winning, 18-8, Tuesday in Camden, N.J. Three players scored four goals apiece for the Lady Cyclones, who finished their regular-season with the best record in program history at 13-1. RU ended its inaugural season with a 3-8 record.

Sophomore Danielle Bay (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) led Centenary with eight points on four goals and four assists. Seniors Megan Mars (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) (four goals, one assist) and Kiti Ovaskainen (Helsinki, Finland/Vaskivuoren Lukio) (four goals, three assists) played well in their final regular-season contest for CC. Ovaskainen also grabbed a game-high eight groundballs.

Sophomore Dawn Williams (Bedminster, N.J./Bernardsville) and freshman Nicole Judd (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette Senior) both scored twice and junior Lauren LaMotta (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) tallied a goal and an assist. Goalies LeslieAnn Pritchard (Port Byron, N.Y./Port Byron) and Brittany Young (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) combined to record eight saves for CC.

Annalise Strojan and Alexa Giampietro combined for all the scoring for Rutgers, as Strojan led the way with five goals and two assists and Giampietro scored three times. Goalie Rachel Powell helped keep the game close with 18 saves in the loss.

Giampietro and Strojan combined to cut an early Centenary lead to two, at 6-4, with 10:19 remaining in the opening period. But Mars scored three times as the Lady Cyclones went on a 6-0 run through the end of the first half and the beginning of the second to take a commanding 12-4 edge, and then held on for the 10-goal victory.

Centenary returns to action with the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) semifinals on Wednesday, May 5, at Cyclone Field.
