Catawba Grabs 9-7 Victory at Lees-McRae

BANNER ELK, NC -- Freddie Turcio (Guilford, CT/Guilford) snapped a tie late in the third quarter and Catawba went on to knock off host Lees-McRae 9-7 in lacrosse action on Wednesday night at Tate Field. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 9-7 and ensures a winning season. The Bobcats fall to 3-8.

Turcio's goal with 6:55 left in the third quarter snapped a 6-all tie and ended a three-goal spurt by Lees-McRae. Marty Tuohy (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) added a man-up goal just 47 seconds into the fourth quarter for an 8-6 edge. Matt Markey got Lees-McRae within a goal at the 8:59 mark, but Braden Artem (Acton, Ontario, CANADA/Christ the King) got the final tally with 4:16 remaining to lift the Indians.

Catawba never trailed and went up 6-3 at the break on consecutive goals by Dave Banik (Marietta, GA/Lassiter HS) in the closing minutes of the half. He picked up a man-up goal at the 1:45 mark and added another just 32 seconds later. Lees-McRae scored three goals in the first six minutes for the third quarter before Turcio put the Tribe up for good.

Banik led Catawba with three goals with Tuohy and Artem each adding two goals and an assist. Casey Chinn (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) won 16 of 19 face-offs and picked up seven ground balls to help the Indians control the game. Drew Stoltz (Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel Hill HS) had three ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Josh Liptak (Cary, NC/Athens Drive HS) made just four saves in posting the win in goal for Catawba. The Indians limited the Bobcats to a mere 17 shots with a 13-4 edge in the final quarter. Catawba finished with 34 shots. Andy Nesdill recorded 16 saves for Lees-McRae.
