North Central Rallies to Beat Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. (Apr. 29, 2010) - A furious second-half rally allowed the North Central College women's lacrosse team to even the score in home-and-home series with Carthage College on Wednesday, as the Cardinals scored six unanswered goals in the final minutes to post a 14-13 victory over the Lady Reds at Art Keller Field.

Carthage (4-11) scored the game's first four goals and kept the Cardinals off the board until Caroline Gully scored after nearly 10 minutes had elapsed. North Central narrowed the gap to just two goals on three separate occasions in the first half, the last of which came at 7-5 following Gully's score with 4:12 left. The Lady Reds, however, scored twice in 14 seconds near the end of the period and took a 9-5 advantage into halftime.

Gully scored on a free position to net the first goal of the second period, but Carthage's Olivia Nino and Hannah Sopeth each scored in a 33-second window to extend the hosts' lead to 11-6. Gully and Amy Frazzini each found the net before the Lady Reds' Desirate Murphy restored the Carthage lead to four goals at 12-8 with 17:36 to play.

Murphy's goal would be the last Carthage score for more than 16 minutes, as the Cardinals went on the attack and dominated play up and down the field. Danielle Fiala got the comeback started by scoring with 15:03 to play, and Jessica Morgan tallied two straight goals before Gully tied the game with 8:10 to play.

North Central (4-10) took its first lead on Fiala's goal with 7:59 on the clock, and Morgan scored again with 6:23 remaining, which enabled the Cardinals to stay in front despite Murphy's goal with 1:07 to play.

Gully scored a game-high six goals, which is the most by a player in a single game at North Central, while Morgan totaled four. Frazzini made five ground-ball pickups and shared the team lead in draw controls (4) with Gully and Fiala. Elise Manzie turned in 11 saves.

Sopeth and Murphy each scored four goals to pace Carthage.

The Cardinals close out the 2010 season on Friday against Fontbonne University (6-5). Play is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m., and North Central will conduct its annual Senior Night festivities prior to the start of the game.
