Late Rally Lifts Rowan Over Scranton

GLASSBORO, N.J.-Junior attacker Lauren Yee (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and senior attacker Tori Hart (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) scored back-to-back goals within a three-minute span late in the second half to help Rowan University hold off The University of Scranton, 8-6, in non-conference action Thursday afternoon.

Senior attacker Alayna Morris (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional), junior midfielder Alli Dickey (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) and Hart led the Profs, now 10-5, with two goals apiece and Yee finished with a goal and an assist.

Scranton, which lost its second straight game to fall to 6-9, was led by sophomore attacker Kaela Mahon (Avon-by-the-Sea, N.J./Saint Rose) with two goals and junior defender Katie Slade (Buckingham, Pa./Central Bucks East), junior midfielder Kristin Pickell (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon), and first-year players Jilliana DePaolera (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and Deanna Giorno (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) added one apiece.

The Royals trailed by only one, 5-4 at intermission and 6-5 with 12 minutes remaining, before Yee and Hart gave the Profs enough of a cushion with goals at the 52 and 54-minute marks, respectively, to take an 8-5 lead with only 4:20 remaining. Giorno then closed out the scoring by converting a free-position shot with 44 seconds left.

Scranton's only lead came early in the first half on an unassisted goal by Mahon at the 1:04 mark before Dickey and Hart answered with unassisted goals less than a minute apart to give the Profs their first lead, 2-1. The Royals tied it one more time-on a goal by Pickell on a play set up by junior attacker Caroline Pryor (Robbinsville, N.J./Notre Dame)-before Dickey and Harrington countered to regain the lead for good for Rowan.

Defensively, the Profs held the Royals to just four shot attempts in the second half. For the game, Rowan held a 26-14 advantage in shots.

First-year goalie Kathleen Smart (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood) finished with a game-high 10 saves for Scranton while Rowan's Kerry Pehnke (West Windsor, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro N.) was credited with six.

Scranton will end its regular-season this Saturday, May 1, against Landmark Conference leader Catholic University beginning at 12:00 noon at Fitzpatrick Field. A win by the Royals, coupled with a loss by Goucher College against Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, will give Scranton the number four seed for the upcoming Landmark tournament, which begins on Wednesday, May 5, at the site of the number one and two seeds.

Prior to the start of Saturday's game, Amy Arnold (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees), Meaghan Grenaldo (Silver Spring, Md./James H. Blake), Cassie Murphy (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) and Katie Oehl (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) will be honored as part of Senior Day festivities.
