Centenary Drops Overtime Match at Gwynedd-Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. (April 29, 2010) Freshman Robert Nuzzolese (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) scored three goals and senior Jason Rieg (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) tallied four assists, but it wasn't enough as the Centenary men's lacrosse team (5-8, 1-5 CSAC) fell to Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) foe Gwynedd-Mercy (9-4, 4-2 CSAC), 9-8 in overtime, Thursday in Gwynedd Valley, Pa.

Freshman Conor Nolan (Hillsborough, N.J./Immaculata) scored twice for the Cyclones and sophomore Jeffrey Prudente (Somerville, N.J./Somerville), junior Joe Swantkoski (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) and freshman Chris White (Middle Twp., N.J./Middle Twp.) each found the back of the net once. Senior Eddie Montalvo (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) grabbed seven groundballs to lead the team and freshman goalie Kyle Burgess (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees) stopped 13 shots in the loss. Seven players scored for GMC, led by Nicholas Hummel's three goals.

Hummel gave the home team an 8-7 lead with 1:24 remaining in the fourth quarter. But Rieg and Nuzzolese collaborated with just nine seconds to go to send the contest into overtime. Mason Risner scored with 1:16 left in the extra session to win the game for the Griffins.

Centenary returns to action on Saturday with a home game against Wells on Senior Day at 3:00 p.m. Prior to the game, the team will honor its two seniors, Montalvo and Rieg.
