No. 6 Colby Knocked off by Bates in NESCAC Finale

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Briana Gross (Andover, Mass.) and Jenn Brallier (Chambersburg, Pa.) each had three goals as Bates College held sixth-ranked Colby College to one second-half goal on the way to a 10-7 win in New England Small College Athletic Conference women's lacrosse Friday night at Bill Alfond Field.

Bates (7-7 overall, 3-6 NESCAC) earned the eighth seed in the NESCAC playoffs and will play at top-seeded Trinity College on Sunday at noon in a league quarterfinal game. Colby secured the third seed and will play host to either Tufts University or Middlebury College on Sunday at noon.

The Bobcats fell behind 1-0 when Colby's Kathleen Kramer (Norwell, Mass.) scored 2:35 into the game. However, Bates quickly settled down and scored the next five goals for a 5-1 lead with 12:01 to the break. The Mules had five of the last six goals of the half and the teams went into intermission knotted at 6-6.

Bates' defense did the job in the second half, holding the Mules (11-3, 6-3) without a goal for 26:49. The Bobcats received two goals from Brallier with 29:11 and 16:33 left in the game and Gross scored unassisted with 3:06 left for a 9-6 margin. The Mules cut the lead to 9-7 on a goal by Caroline Atwater (Catonsville, Md.) with 3:11 left, but Bates sealed the victory when Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.) scored with 3.3 seconds remaining.

Joan O'Neill (Westwood, Mass.) had two goals and one assist for Bates. Molly Radis (Peaks Island, Maine) finished with one goal and one assist.

Kramer paced Colby with three goals, while Kate Pistel (Amherst, Mass.) had one goal and one assist.
