Davenport Edges Grove City in CCLA Quarterfinals

SALINE, Mich. - The #5 ranked Panthers will get their rematch with #2 Grand Valley after the squeezed past #11 Grove City on Friday in the Central Collegiate Lacrosse Association (CCLA) Quarterfinals. Davenport will take on the Lakers at 12:00 PM on Saturday in Saline. The game will be aired live on the DAN.

Davenport entered the 2010 CCLA Tourney as the #4 overall seed of the six teams as the three division winners (GVSU, Dayton and Hope) took the top three spots. The Panthers found themselves up against a scrappy Grove City team but came away with the hard fought 1-goal victory.

Grove City struck first less than a minute into the game but Davenport came right back with a goal from Gavin Morris (Rockford, Mich.). After a second GC goal gave them the lead again, the Panthers rallied with three unanswered goals to finish the first quarter up 4-2.

Scoring along with Morris for DU in the first were Sam Carlson (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Oliver Wade (Burlington, Ontario) and Taylor Keyworth (Grand Rapids, Mich.). The two teams then traded goals in the second quarter as Wade scored his second of the game lifting DU to a 5-3 halftime lead.

In a quarter that Davenport usually dominates, Grove City controlled the score In the 3rd as they got to within one at 6-5 with a 2-1 advantage in the third 15 minutes of play. The lone DU goal was scored by Cody Cross (Grand Rapids, Mich.).

Needing an early score to put some distance between them and their opponents, Davenports leading scorer Shawn Beer (Aurora, Ontario) cracked scored one of only two points on the day but it was a big goal just 49 seconds into the final quarter to put the Panthers up 7-5.

Less than a minute later, Grove City got to within one again, but Gavin Morris scored his second of the day with just less than 5 minutes to play to seal the win.

Zach Higgins (Courtice, Ontario) was solid in net as he stopped eight shots on the day and improved his record to 7-2 on the year.

Davenport will take on top seed GVSU on Saturday in the semifinals at 12:00 PM. The winner will move on the face the winner of Hope and Dayton at 7:00 PM on Saturday night. The Davenport Athletics Network will carry the game LIVE starting with the pre-game at 11:45 AM.
