Hartwick Caps Season with Narrow Victory at Alfred

ALFRED, NY Hartwick defeated Alfred on the road 10-8 on Saturday to bring the 2010 campaign to a close. The Hawks led by a 5-1 count at the half but a furious comeback in the third quarter would hand the Saxons a one-goal advantage. Four straight 'Wick goals, however, would seal up the victory.

Senior Dave Aitchison (Farmingdale, NY/N. Massapequa) scored three goals and added three assists to lead the Hawks and freshman Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) added three goals. Aitchison ends the season with 29 goals and 34 assists for 63 points. It ranks as the 10th highest single-season point total in Hartwick history. Hughes' three first-half tallies gives him 30 goals in his successful freshman campaign.

Freshman Joe Shields (Loudonville, NY/Shaker) contributed two goals for the Hawks and seniors Brandon Wilk (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and Steve Kuron (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh), who were playing in their final collegiate game, each tallied once.

Mike Russo paced Alfred with three consecutive goals in the third-quarter rally. Five other Saxons registered one goal apiece.

The Hawks broke the ice 7:47 into the contest as Kuron tallied and Hughes would extend the lead just 1:13 later for a two-goal edge. Matt Zon answered for Alfred and the period ended with the Blue and White holding a 2-1 lead.

'Wick dominated the second quarter, scoring the only three goals and outshooting the Saxons by a 16-3 margin. Hughes and Aitchison accounted for all the offense for the Hawks in the quarter. Aitchison set up both Hughes' tallies and he added an unassisted goal of his own to hand the Hawks a 5-1 lead at the end of 30 minutes.

Alfred turned the tables on Hartwick in the third quarter as they tallied five consecutive times in a six-minute span to take its first lead of the day, 6-5. James Cahill scored 2:21 into the half and Russo scored three unassisted goals in two minutes and 45 seconds to tie the score. David Malave tallied Alfred's sixth goal with 6:39 remaining in the period. Aitchison stopped the bleeding with 45 seconds left and the game went into the final quarter deadlocked at six.

Wilk gave Hartwick the lead for good 30 seconds into the fourth . It marked his 68th and final tally in a Hartwick uniform. Shields netted his first of the day 1:24 later and Aitchison made it 9-6 with 7:11 showing on the clock.

Two Alfred goals in 12 seconds brought the Saxons to within one with five and a half minutes to go, but the Hawks controlled the ball for the next four minutes, outshooting AU 5-0 before Shields finally gave 'Wick a two-goal cushion from a pass from Bobby Cassidy (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside).

'Wick held a huge advantage in shots for the game, 51-31. The Saxons led in the ground ball department 38-29.

Hartwick senior goalie Ryan Twardowski (Emmaus, PA/S. Lehigh) made six saves in cage in his final game. He finishes the year with 142 stops. Alfred's Tim Doyle kept the Saxons in the contest with 19 saves.

Senior Kevin Miller (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh), playing in his last game for the Hawks, recorded a game-high six ground balls. He added four caused turnovers to cap the year with 37. Alex Skvarch (Syracuse, NY/Marcellus) caused a career-high six caused turnovers to finish with a team-high 40 for the season.

The Hawks close out the 2010 campaign 6-8 overall and 2-6 in Empire 8 play.
