Ohio State Defeated by Bellarmine in Overtime Battle

COLUMBUS, Ohio Despite four goals each from freshman Dominique Alexander and senior James Green and a five-point game from rookie Logan Schuss, the Ohio State men's lacrosse team lost to Bellarmine in overtime, 14-13, Saturday in Ohio Stadium. The game marked Senior Day for Ohio State (7-7, 3-4 ECAC), while Bellarmine (9-6, 3-4 ECAC) closed out its season.

The teams scored just seven goals in the first half, with the Buckeyes trailing 4-3 at halftime. The offenses exploded for 19 goals in the second half, with 10 goals in the third quarter. Ohio State held a one-goal lead (9-8) after three quarters on senior Mario Ventiquattro's last-second shot, but the Knights scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter to take a three-goal lead (12-9).

The Buckeyes kept the game close and Green and Alexander each scored in the final 2:02 of regulation to force overtime. In the extra stanza Bellarmine's Keaton Ohara scored on the run after a Buckeye turnover to lift the Knights to the ECAC win.

Green's four goals matched his career high and game him 100 points as a Buckeye. Schuss, the team's leading scorer and the highest-scoring true freshman in Buckeye history, had two goals and three assists to extend his team point lead to 48. Alexander's four goals were a career high, giving him 11 on the year.

The teams were tied at 2 after the first quarter. Alexander scored off a feed from Jeff Tundo at 12:28 to put Ohio State on the board. Bellarmine scored twice in less than a minute to take a 2-1 lead, with Ohara scoring at 7:22 and Sean Doyle tallying at 6:37. At 5:12 the Buckeyes knotted the score when Mike Pires found Schuss for a score.

The teams scored just three goals in the second quarter, with Ohio State heading into halftime trailing 4-3. Doyle scored a man-up goal just 35 seconds into the quarter, followed by Shane Anderson's tally at 8:30. Alexander scored unassisted at 4:36 to cut the lead to one (4-3) and neither team was able to score until halftime. Bellarmine goalie Dillon Ward, who had five saves in the first quarter, made six stops in the second.

Ten goals were scored in the third quarter, which saw four ties and each team take a two-goal lead. The quarter ended with Ohio State ahead, 9-8. At 11:55 Ventiquattro set up Schuss to tie the game at 4-all. The teams traded man-up goals in a 30-second span, with Jarrett Davis scoring for BU at 8:30 and Schuss finding Rodgers at 8:00 for a 5-5 game. Pires scored off an assist from Schuss at 6:22 to put Ohio State ahead and Green extended the lead to two (7-5) 29 seconds later with an unassisted score.

Bellarmine then went on a three-goal run in a 1:21 span. Doyle started the scoring at 3:35 with a man-up tally, followed by a goal from Chase Williams at 2:53. Doyle again found the back of the net at 2:14 to put Bellarmine ahead, 8-7. The Buckeyes scored twice in the final 29 seconds to retake the lead. Alexander scored, assisted by Schuss, with 29 seconds on the clock and Tundo found Ventiquattro for a goal as time expired to put Ohio State ahead 9-8. Buckeye senior goalie Brandon Freeman made four saves in the quarter.

The teams combined for nine goals in the fourth quarter. The Knights held a three-goal lead at 9:37 after scoring the first four goals of the quarter and led by two with 2:35 remaining, but Ohio State was able to knot the score and force overtime. Just 20 seconds into the quarter Andersen tallied to tie the game (9-9) for the seventh time. Davis scored a man-up goal at 11:11 to put Bellarmine ahead, followed by goals from Luke Acton (10:23) and Trevor Timmerberg (9:37) to make the score 12-9.
